Yah may wanna make sure that it's okay with him to post that since they don't have image editing ok on...Anyway, back on topic...

The Tokina 11-16mm and the 7d...what an amazing landscape combo...Here's one from a trip to the Oregon coast...got up at 4am so we could be at the beach at sunrise...was tired, but it was worth it just for this shot alone:

Not a big deal. I don't mind, go ahead and edit, I'll change that image editing thing okay eventually... or maybe not, since I'm not interested in doing post at this point I can avoid going through this each time someone wants to prove an image will look better, or "pop" with some post-processing. I'm aware that images can be made to look better, but again it depends on the goal of the shooter. My goal when I go out and shoot is to use the device I carry to capture things as I see them, not to sit in front of a computer hours, days, weeks, later and create some contrived hyper-reality out of the images. If I failed to use my camera's ability to capture what it can then I need to shoot better. The second part of it, and really almost as important, is I don't enjoy doing post processing, at all. I felt the same way about the darkroom. That combined with the amount of time I already spend in front of a computer: not interested. I got a camera to get my rear out of this chair more often, if it ends up causing me to sit here more I would just as likely stop shooting. But that's for me, to each their own right? I do shoot both raw and jpeg though so if I want to eventually screw around with the stuff the images will be there.

Leave that one though, for people that are interested, and I am mildly, it is a good example of the difference that can be created.

If you shoot RAW, you must use post processing to get the most from your photos. If you prefer to shoot jpeg's, you don't have to post process so much, but don't be afraid to bump the in-camera settings a little. Digital SLR's are generally very conservative with the in-camera settings.

That is one reason most people tend to do some post processing, even with jpeg's. The other reason is that Digital SLR's don't have the same exposure latitude and dynamic range that film cameras enjoyed.

You can adjust these settings in the "Picture Style" menu. The Standard default settings are:

Sharpness 3 (0 to 7)
Contrast 0 (- 4 to +4)
Saturation 0 (- 4 to +4)
Color tone 0 (- 4 to +4)

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/canon_eos_50d/canon_eos_50d_pictstyle.jpghttp://www.steves-digicams.com/sdc-classic/2008_reviews/canon_eos_50d/canon_eos_50d_ps_detail.JPG

For those who only shoot jpeg's, and don't like to do Post processing, it can be very valuable to bump up these settings.

Here is what I have been using lately:

Sharpness 5 (0 to 7)
Contrast +2 (- 4 to +4)
Saturation +2 (- 4 to +4)
Color tone 0 (- 4 to +4)

Huh... I don't know where I got my info or if I just made it up but I thought DSLRs had reached a point where their dynamic range was now greater than film. My experience thus far has not proven that.

That aside, Mike, thanks for the info. For my trip to Cuba this week I had manipulated those settings, but more conservatively than you have suggested. I still didn't manage to get the colour I was quite looking for with my settings. The results of that conservativeness shows in your example balancing my photo. I have now altered the settings as you have suggested, unfortunately I'm back in bland ol' Burlington which is devoid of colour to check them out.

Well I could be wrong, but I thought I read it somewhere, and like you, it is also been my experience that film has better exposure latitude and dynamic range than digital. Especially compared to the 400 speed print film I used to use.

Digital is definitely not close to having the dynamic range of negative film. Or even slide film.

Sure...Indian Beach on the oregon coast during sunrise hehe...I used a 4 stop ND filter, took 3 shots and made a mild looking hdr of it, then tweaked the colors to be what i remembered....the reason it's good is the light was really fantastic that morning hehe. I'd say, don't be afraid of using f/11 or f/16 if you want a longer shutter speed would be my main piece of advice.

Camera was probably set up on a tripod, set on continuous shooting mode, and combined in photoshop.

Mostly right. This was actually done handheld. Makes merging the photos a tad tricky, but not impossible.

What's the exif on that one? I'm getting my Tokie soon and I want to try out star trails, weather being extremely nice here on the wet coast (a rarity to be sure) :D

Thanks! It was a perfect day yesterday. Dark blue skies with a few clouds and just above freezing, so my fingers didn't fall off! But yeah I think I am about ready for spring too. We have had the most snow this winter that I can ever remember. We usually get about 1-2 snows that are more than a dusting and we have had about 6 this year, which is a dream come true for me!

I use the B+W Slim Kaesemann MCR CPL for my lenses. I was told the regular one won't vignette at 11mm but the slim is only like $5 more so I just went the safe route just in case. The only downside to the slim is you can't put a lens cap on it, which isn't a big deal to me. Others may be able to verify if the regular is safe or not.

I use a regular B+W Kaesamann (sp?) CPL on mine and it works great. I'd highly recommend a good brand like B+W, Heliopan, or Hoya. You get what you pay for.

edit: definitely satisfied with the performance in Manual at distances before infinity, still not totally sure it's working 100% beyond that (I can't seem to get sharp focus on objects past 7ft, either with AF or manual). Anyone heard of this? Would someone be willing to take a shot focused on an object ~8ft away at 2.8 and post the result? Sorry for cluttering the thread and feel free to PM if you're willing.

To get back on track: took advantage of a nice sunny day to head to a local park and play with the lens a bit.

Thought this thread has been a little quiet, so I took it upon myself to walk around the neighbourhood to snap some pics.

All pics taken with a Marumi DHG CPL. The CPL review thread had this ranked 4th behind the best B+W and Marumi Super DHG:

http://www.lenstip.com/115.4-article-Polarizing_filters_test_Results_and_summary.html

But the DHG has a bang-for-the-buck rank of 2nd, so I picked one up for $60 shipped for the Toki.

I am very tempted to get this lens. I'm Just not sure how much use it will get.

I didn't think that I would use mine as much as I do. I figured that it would be used for an occasional wide angle shot when I couldn't stitch together a panorama (which seemed to happen annoyingly often) or for interior architectural shots. However, I find myself using it far more than I would have guessed (probably about 1/3 of my "everyday" type shots if I were to venture a guess).

I called Tokina USA and checked on availability. The guy seemed to be clueless. He said that they were on back order and the supply that was inbound were all pre-sold that was outgoing to retailers. He suggested that I buy one from one of their retailers even though it was out of stock. He said that I should get one within 3 months maybe doing this. He had no idea when the next batch were coming in either.

I wish I had this kind of demand in my business. Frustrating to say the least...

Thanks but no thanks.

I had a similar experience when I emailed the Tokina guy in Australia. I got sick of waiting, with no ETA in sight, and bought on Ebay from Hong Kong. Got the lens within two days. (Well, I would have, except I wasn't at home when the delivery bloke arrived)

How many of you handhold this lens? I always thought I would wait to get an UWA lens until I had a tripod, but that will not be the case. I have a feeling I will be using this lens a lot as a walk-around. Mine will be here tomorrow.

UWA lenses are much easier to walk around with and hand-hold than a telephoto lens. The only time I ever put mine on a tripod is when I go out at night and do long exposure stuff.

So I now have both the Tokina 11-16mm and the Canon 10-22mm. Both are great lenses. The Tokina does seem a bit sharper, but the Canon is no slouch. I planned on selling one or the other, but I think that I'll leave the Canon 10-22mm on the 40D because it works great around the house with my kids for my wife. The 22mm end is very useful for us. The Tokina will be my tourist UWA lens for my 7D for when we are on vacations. It's hard to part with either lens!

If you look, the shadow only exists for the person at the start of the jump. The rest were added in from other photos of the jump digitally.
