I check local Craigslist daily for bargains. I picked up 70-200 f2.8 IS, brand new 17-40L, and brand new 85mm 1.8. Not all at once...but intermittently.
But I'm seeing more and more people selling equipment and stating they're strapped for cash and must sell. I guess it's a good way to pick up a bargain product if you can find it. However, I see way more Nikon product being dumped vs. Canon... 5 to 1.
Anyways... how many of you have bought through Craigslist? It's getting addicting.

One downside to Craigslists - they've become the primary place to fence stolen goods now that the pawnshops require fingerprints. Ask your seller to see proof of purchase. Most foks will ignore this, of course, in the quest for a great deal but if you get tracked down as having bought stolen lenses (it does happen when perps get busted as they do eventually) you lose your glass (it goes back to the rightful owner) and are still out the money.
I have a D3 on the way back to me that was stolen 6 weeks ago and recovered by a PI I hired. The ex new owner is pretty unhappy now with the $4100 'great deal' he got on Craigslist. But his options were pretty straightforward: give up the camera or be charged with receiving stolen property. (He didn't do anything wrong by buying it, but once he was made aware it was stolen keeping it would be a felony). The PI found the transaction from their database of Craigslists that they and most Police Departments keep now in about 10 minutes. Took a couple of weeks to track down the purchaser and get the paperwork served at his office to 'convince' him to part with the camera.

I check CL often however seldom do any deals.
Sometimes I will find great deals, however I definitely stay away from deals I think looks suspicious.
For instance, you see a lot of people selling a camera, strap, lens, and battery with no box, charger, accessories. I just have to assume it is stolen.
Some people try to trick you into thinking otherwise. They will string you along, claiming to have the box etc, then at the very last minute, tell you opps...they lost everything...except camera, strap, lens, and battery.
Idiots. I will NEVER knowingly buy stolen goods, no matter how good the deal is.
Don't get me started on selling on CL. Most people ignore things like "I will not ship" or "price is absolutely firm". Idiots. I might as well Ebay my stuff.
But then again, I deal with CL NYC...so it's filled with the scum of the earth.

I'm only adding 2 more pieces to my collection. 100mm-400mm and a 5D. I would like to pay $1000 for the lens...I've seen an ad for around $1000 before but I didn't pull the trigger. I will most likley buy a new 5D when the price ever hits around $1500... so if you have those 2...then I'll buy it from ya... I'm in Rowlett...so right down the street from you!

Things I've bought on Craigslist:
1. 3 hamster cages
2. 1 Jeep Cherokee
3. 1 Basset hound
Things I've sold on Craigslist:
1. Nothing.
2. People will come get your free crap, though. Put it on the curb, take a pic, list it as free. Next time you look out the window it's gone. Magic.

I sold many things on CL. I am weary on buying a lens though. Not sure how to go about testing it and such. Only once in a while does a Canon lens pop up where there are tons of Nikons.

I agree, there is tons of NEW stuff for cheap prices. Why would someone sell new in the box, especially 3 or 4 of them??? Thats always a dead giveaway. I would never buy new off of craigslist no matter how great the deal unless they can provide proof of purchase.

I bought my first slr, the xt, from CL, sold it there. most of all my equipment, i got it and sold it from there. i used to live in san jose, and the bay area CL is way better and has more variety than any other region. i've also bought/sold cars from there. there are some scammers but most of the time, you meet up with the person somewhere in a public place and do the transaction, less risk of buying something broken or getting jipped.

I've sold several camera items on Craigslist with no problem. I always meet people in a public place, usually a coffee shop near my house. I also always specify cash and local sales only. That has always worked fine for me, although I usually get a couple of emails from people way out of state, wanting to trade something, send a money order, etc. I just ignore those. I've never bought anything from Craigslist, though. I like the read the Computer Gigs section for entertainment value - people are always wanting someone to work for free there!

This ad always cracks me up:
http://lancaster.craigslist.org/pho/667138344.html
Lol. people who steal items must not do research to find out how much something costs. he's selling all that for $700... if I had all that to sell, It'd be somewhere around $2000, maybe a little more.
EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot, I once saw in the free section of my area, a 8 month old walk behind mower, It was a real nice one, saw it at home depot for like $350 - ish. The ad said it didn't run anymore. I thought it would make nice parts for another mower I had which was like almost 10 years old. Well I got the mower home to find the spark plug was shot, replaced the spark plug and got a real nice mower that works great for the price of a spark plug... :D.. You can find some great deals on CL.

Ignore those ads. If you inquire, you will get a response with an address in England. Those listings are all over the place.

I have sold numerous items on craigslist and have also given away items. It always astounds me regarding the interest I receive from a craigslist ad.
I had some left over cement blocks which were just taking up space and looking ugly in my yard - I craigslisted them and had all kinds of calls.
I have sold two vehicles and a boat through craigslist. Igot better response than when I listed the vehicles on the Autotrader.
However, I am a bit reluctant to sell photo gear on craigslist because I don't want to identify my home as a repositary of expensive and highly pilferable equipment.
People have even stolen purebred puppies which were advertised on craigslist.

That's why I always meet people at a coffee shop when I sell stuff. I suppose someone could track me down if they really try, but if they are willing to go to that effort, there's not much I can do about it anyway.
