Hi everyone,
I am new to the digital photography world and I am glad that i found a forum is build for avid photographers.
i am currently looking for a camera and i have an eye for the s500 and A95. I would hear your recommendations about these 2. Also , my friend has a G6 and he said that it's a wonderful camera. I know that's beyond my budget but is his much better than these 2?? I mostly use it for travelling and sports events, i guess.
Anyway hope to hear from u folks.

We hear you - just nobody with those particular cameras (or opinions on them) around right now . . .
I have the A95's predecessor, the A80 and find it a good camera as a supplement to my D60 and 20D FWIW.

I really enjoy my S500. I like it for travel because it is so very small and the charger takes up little room. I can get the camera, charger, spare battery and extra media cards into a small 3x6 case. This takes up little room in luggage and the camera easily fits into pocket or purse. If you have large hands, you might find it too small. It also takes very fine pictures! It is lacking in individual controls which suits me just fine. If you like more control, the A95, might be your best choice. Good luck!

In terms of spec, the cameras are very similar.
The major difference between the two, apart from the obvious difference in design and style, is that the A95 has more options to change some settings manually, such as shutter speed. (The IXUS only allows you to manually set the shutter speed between 1 and 15 seconds for night shots)
You can compare the two here :

The A95 would be easier for a novice. The S500 a bit more advanced.

I think Bosamar has things in reverse!
The S500 is fully auto point and fire.
The A95 is point and fire with manual/aoerture priority/shutter priority overide. The A95 is much more advanced if you choose, or can be as point and fire as the S500.
Both are 5 megapixel, probably same lens and processor. A95 has larger, flippsble LCD
The choice is size V versatility. The S500 is smaller, the A95 bigger, but with potential to grow with you as your knowledge grows.
If you need small size go S500, if not go A95.
I have S400 which is V good, but image quality is way behind my Olympus C765.

i would recommend going with the A95... especially if you are comparing to your friends G6... you will be able to take just about the same quality of pics!

The A95 allows aperture priority and shutter priority auto exposure as well as more "canned" basic modes; it gets a tad closer (Tele end) in macro mode; the lens is slightly longer FL (both wide and tele); the display's bigger (1.8" vs. 1.5"); the LCD display flips out and swivels, making it easier to take pictures at odd angles; and the A95 uses AA cells (including NiMH rechargables) rather than a proprietary battery.
