So i ordered an Manfrotto 680B monopod for my longer lenses..with I need anything to mount them to it or will the screw on the monopod fit right onto the mounting foot of my 400 2.8L IS?

It goes right to the lens. I personally like a tilt head on mine though you can get by with no head at all once you learn to tilt the pod. Some people like ball heads but I say that is an unnecessary point of failure for a big lens on one foot.

The screw will fit, but many folks prefer to have at least some sort of quick-release mechanism. A 3229 tilt head is a popular choice, or you can just get the 3299, which is just the QR adapter itself.

As already stated, the 680 will screw right into the tripod foot of the 400. My preference is a QR clamp like the RRS screw clamp to facilitate easy mounting and removal of the 400 on/from the monopod. After awhile it gets old constantly screwing the monopod onto the tripod foot. Also, I know of several colleagues who had to have the tripod mount replaced because the treads became stripped.

You need to take a look at RRS, Kirk, or Wimberley sites for their QR clamps and plates. They will make using the 400 even more of a pleasure to use.
