My adult son is getting a new Nikon D70 with the 18-70 kit lens for Christmas. I tried with all my power to lead him back to Canon (original camera was AE-1) to no avail. Now, I must get a Christmas gift to go with the camera.
I have seen a 70-300/4.5-6 ED Nikon lens at about $300 @ B & H. Does anyone know if this lens is worthwhile??? . . . . or would a better gift be a 1 Gig CF card (Lexar 80X) and Nikon Capture software.

I have omitted my Sig because it defaults to one that is not mine!!!

Wow, Don't think you are going to get much response here unfortunately. Considering it is a Canon Forum and all.
Any idea why he choose the D70 over the 20D?

I would suggest the Nikon 50 f1.8 and a 1 GB card.

If money is a reason for him to go for the Nikon D70, you might offer an upgrade to a Canon 20D and 17-85 IS as christmas gift ...
Best regards,
Andy

Don- You will get better answers in a N***N forum.
Suggest you buy yourself a Canon and come back here, your son will learn soon enough !

That's a great suggestion..
CF cards are getting cheap too fast. By July, it would as if you had given him a pack of LifeSavers---appreciated at the moment, but soon forgotten.

I was actually concidering the D70 kit myself. The only reasons being that it offers a much better kit lens than the DRebel, and because in kit form, it was/is $200 cheaper than the then 10D and now 20D body only.
However, after I started playing around with it a little at work, I began to dislike it. It feels cheap, sounds cheap, the menu system stinks, lowest ISO setting of only 200, and Nikon doesn't offer a vertical grip for it.
The major turnaround was when the 20D made it to the market. Everyone was coming in to buy the new 20D and were wanting to sell thier 10D's cheap!
So, for the $1300 I might have spent on the D70 kit, I now have instead a lightly used 6 month old 10D body, vertical grip and two batteries for $700, the Tamron lens for $300, the 50mm F1.8 for $50, 4GB microdrive for $150, three flashes, two tripods and optical slaves for $35, light tent for $90, and a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200 AW for $50.
I've spent a total with tax $1375 for everything I have, compaired to the $1384 for just the D70 kit!!
Now, I probably went a little too far with this post, but at least now you know the kind of savings I made in going with Canon, not to mention a much better camera and platform.

That's what I was thinking!! LOL
Apparently, from looking at his website, his wife is the one with the talent, NOT him!

Just a reminder:

That is it!
If he irrationally prefers Nikon, you offer him to upgrade his D70 to a Canon 20D, 17-85 IS lens AND VERTICAL GRIP :-)
That would be an offer he truly can't resist....

Andy
