View Full Version : Stupid forum lingo that should just die out already

There are terms, lingo, and jargon we see on the forum every day that should just die out already. Mine:
"The Holy Trinity" of lenses... which no one can agree on. Is it the 35/50/85Ls? 35/85/135? Then people add things to the term, like "Holy Trinity of zooms" or "Holy Trinity of f/4 zooms"... ugh.
'Tog... some bastardization shorting of "Photog" which was already an abbreviation for "Photographer." Really, people, we don't pay by the letter, just type it out.
what are yours?

The bigger problem I have with "lense" is that my doggone Websters Third New International Dictionary which weighs even more than a Bigma states that "lense" is an OK alternate spelling of "lens".

Of course, these are the same people who once approved the use of "cigaret" as an alternative spelling for "cigarette," and were laughed out of the lexicographers' club.
That's one of the reasons I use the Random House Unabridged.
Sorry, but "lense" is not an acceptable alternative for "lens" in the photographic sense. There are NO photographic lens manufacturers who put the word "lense" on their product.
"Lense" is an alternative spelling of "lens" ONLY in a biomedical context, and even there its use is discouraged.
This is similar to the usages where a house can have two TV antennas, but an ant has two antennae. Different things, different usages.

I agree, but that is not proper American English usage, and I am an American who writes for a living.
Periods (full stops) and commas go inside the quotes, colons and semicolons go outside the quotes, and question marks and exclamation points go inside the quotes if a part of the quoted material and outside the quotes if not.
There is only one case in American English where periods or commas go outside the quotes, and that is when what is quoted is to be taken as specific characters, not as a word.
Also, in American English, we use double quotes as the basic quote form, with single quotes as internal quotes, alternating accordingly. I believe you Brits do the reverse in formal writing.
Of course, the majority of the posters in these forums don't use and wouldn't recognize proper English, be it American, British, or other dialect. The whole thing is therefore rather moot.
I'm just grateful when they make some attempt to use English at all. When they don't, I simply ignore them, even if I understand what they are asking and know the answer to their questions.
I don't do texting.

We can talk gear and specs all day long and bore each other to tears, but damn it some things are just beyond measurbation.. (what about that term? or Pixel peeping? )
Let life have some mystery,. for Odin's sake, the 200mm f/1.8 IS magic, when I reach for it, I feel just like I'm Thor reaching for Mjolner,.. it's not the biggest weapon on the battle field, but it has Magic powers that puts it ahead of an entire phalanx of 70-200mm zooms.
As for the "Holy Trinity" more mythology, and frankly there should be NO question what lenses this refers to. (35mm, 85mm 135mm L primes )
The term was coined here on POTN and if in it's migration elsewhere to less sensible forums people have lost touch with who the real Gods are, they can turn to our own EF Lens FAQ for guidance and a reminder,. this "bible" contains documentation including the very thread where the term was coined.
I'm not a religious man by any stretch, but I am a spiritual one, and damn it as scientific as my left brain is, when I was in Africa a saw more than just flora and fauna, more than families, species and order,. no, it was more than that, I saw GOD.
So pack up your rulers and focus charts, trash your MTF charts and look at the images instead and if you can;t feel any magic there,. well that's a real shame. I do and that's what keeps me coming back.

The fist stupid post to die out in my honest and deep-felt opinion should be the French Post who have been delaying my gratifications so many times sometimes making things "disappear" (a 20D,various software bundles) and other times delaying the delivery demanding "factures réelles" after I've sent them the copies of PayPal receits and my credit card reviews...
So, in my opinion the first Stupid Post to go is La Poste Francaise!
There have been rumors that the Deutsche Post (the guys who got DHL) would buy them and put half of the 120 000 clercks out on the streets...
I feel sorry for the eBay stores who send out their stuff once the payment has been cleared and then the bureaucracy steps in to protect the local sellers who are but no-good lazy francophone-only jerks!

In a land where we are overrun with Fairies, what's wrong with a little mythology to keep things interesting.
I do have a problem when people give digital items "special powers" as if they are greater than the sum of their electronic parts (mostly in reverence to the 5D these days). I do believe a photo can have "magic" that evokes emotion; that type of magic typically comes courtesy of LIGHT. The magic of light is something we should all have a proper reverence for.
I am occasionally surprised that digital 'togs haven't gone so far as analog audiophiles, questioning what brand of transistors are used inside their cameras or perhaps re-wiring the sensor to the DIGIC, perhaps with an esoteric silver wire from Germany.
"I'm so stoked; I just pulled the trigger and re-cabled my 5D entirely with Shulzenfrank Silver Elite -- pure silver with tungsten/platinum solder -- you should see the magic this thing puts out now! The highlights sparkle and the shadows have an amazing presence"
As for the "Holy Trinity" more mythology, and frankly there should be NO question what lenses this refers to. (35mm, 85mm 135mm L primes )

Mine would be "Noink". Honestly, get a life and call it Nikon. The brand is respectable and I promise, I can take as good of a photo with a Nikon than with a Canon. And Im sure others can too, they just have to get past the name phobia.
And the abbreviation for post processing. PP without the dots:|
Especially when someone says, "Critique my pp." or "Im tired...all I did today was pp."
It takes only a split second to add two dots:D

"Noink" almost made my list of annoying terms, yes.
Noink or any variation on the spelling. It's nikon people, it's just a brand like every thing else out there. gee using the correct name isn't going to make it a better camera.
The other bug, which I must say doesn't happen here is use the use of txt words. it seems that most people can use the full word. :)
that gets my goat no end.
I've had the term Noink in my profile for at least a couple of years. It was to stop the google links of us Ni kon bashing hidden away from those users. Then someone suggested we just post Nikon, so they do see what great cameras Canon have, and poach them. ;)

and that's going to stop them from trying. Only good can come out of them trying to be bigger than everyone else. we get better products because of it. :)
and they are likely to take market share away from the likes of Canon and Nikon. Who btw are the biggest 2.

Omnipotent they are not! Remember Betamax?
I do.
It was actually the superior format. One of Sony's few marketing failures.
20droger
16th of May 2008 (Fri), 11:23
I'll be one of the first to admit that, in general, Sony makes excellent products. Trinitron™ CRTs, for example, were head and shoulders above the rest.
They are not omnipotent, however. They blew it with Betamax by creating a superior format, granted, but one that did not allow an average movie to fit on one tape. They corrected that near the end, but it was too late.
They didn't make the same mistake with Blu-Ray™, and the superior format won out.
With their cameras, they almost blew it again with their Memory-Stick™ cards. But their cameras were just so much better than the competition, at the time, that they managed to squeek through. That battle is not over, however, and they could still lose.
With their DSLRs, I think they blew it with in-camera IS. Granted, that will appeal to many, if not most, of the vacation shooters, but in-camera IS is definitely not the choice of professionals. They may kill or severely wound the Canon and Nikon P&S markets, but I doubt they will make strong inroads into the DSLR market, except at the very lowest end.
Besides which, their lenses don't even come close to top Canon or Nikkor lenses in IQ.
Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
Oh, yes. Speaking of memory cards....
I think Canon should drop CF cards and switch to SD cards. Why? Well, one reason might be that laptops these days typically have integral 5-way card readers, which do not include CF cards. This makes CF cards much less convenient to download in the field.
Another reason is that the interconnect for SD cards is more robust than that for CF cards. Nothing can ruin your day like breaking or bending a pin out in the field, especially in the middle of a commercial shoot.
Why switch to SD cards (instead of some other format, that is)? Because they are (currently, at least) the most common format out there, and are of a convenient size. Memory-Stick™ is a Sony thing, and the xD and mini-SD cards are just too damned small for those of us with big hunking hands to manipulate easily, especially in cold weather when my old-man fingers get stiff.
Besides, Canon already uses SD cards in the 1Ds- and 1D-series cameras. There, they should have two SD slots! Keep the two-card concept! (Ya gotta get sumthin for that much money!)
Again, just my opinion.

Among other things it means when we travel we should adjust to the ways of the places we visit, as opposed to trying to impose our own POV on all the native around us. It means we should not only be accepting of there customs, but the "do " part means we should engage in them (if appropriate )
One of lifes lessons..

I think it will, Jon. There are enough people out there who feel they MUST have an HD picture, lest the world as we know it come to an end.
As the commercial says: "Think of your friends! This game isn't even in HD!"
My "friends" can go buy their own HD, thank you! That way I'll not only save on the purchase of HD equipment, I'll save even more by not having to purchase beer and snacks for those freeloaders!

Believe it or not, Sony sold many, many Betamax machines to radio stations near the onset of radio station automation.
They made great 60-90 minute "cart" machines that could be cued, rolled, paused and/or stopped by computer. A rackful of these could hold your programming for a couple of entire shifts.
They did take a bath on Betamax but not as big a bath as you might think. Also, BetaMAX begat BetaCAM which has been the dominant professional videotape format for a very long time. Sony flat out OWNS the broadcast industry.

I see a Playstation camera coming. WiFi, Bluetooth, 3D-sound with the option of buying all the stuff you ever dreamed off with PayPal and completely skipping the boring and disappointing part of taking photos...going out and coming back with your catch.

Also, in American English, we use double quotes as the basic quote form, with single quotes as internal quotes, alternating accordingly. I believe you Brits do the reverse in formal writing.
Yes, that's right. You lot also put your quotation marks on the wrong side of commas and full stops, but seeing as you also drive on the wrong side of the road I will make no further comment.
Considering that our preferred use is for single quotation marks over double, from reading newspapers over here you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

I hate these Brit vs American arguments. There are people who make grammatical errors on both sides of the pond (God, I hate that expression). I'm an American married to a Brit. He says and eats things that seem odd to me and I say and eat things that seem odd to him. I was moving to London when I met him and he says he'd never go back, so here we are. Tons of Brits over here and tons of Americans over there. Variety is the spice of life. Over-generalizations don't work in anyone's favor.

In a land where we are overrun with Fairies, what's wrong with a little mythology to keep things interesting.

The thing I hate the most isn't really a phrase, but rather a comparison. I keep seeing silly decision making moves using polls that are nuts, like "Poll: 85L or 28-135 IS?".
Maybe that is a little severe, but I see similar things all the time, and the comparisons, both in price and use are frankly irritating to see. I hope some people that list these polls really do so as a joke, because otherwise....
