i would like to be able to take pictures in certain sizes i.e. 4x6, 5x7, 8x10. but the only way they come into my computer are really huge and i have to resize them and then do some trimming to get them the right size. i just don't believe that the pro's would go through all this hassle for a generic size pic. is there a setting on the camera that i missed which dictates picture size. or is there a program that i should be using other then photoshop that will resize pictures to the correct size. any help would be greatly appreciated

This is more of a post-processing question.
Your camera will output a 6mp image that is 3:2 no matter how hard you try.
8x10 prints are not 3:2 though. So some cropping will occur. It's just the way it is and is one of those things that makes a great photographer really. If you can invision what you see in your viewfinder as an actual print.
Select the crop tool in PS, on the menu bar select your desired DPI, then select your dimentions, then crop.

Well if you shoot small JPGs or medium you'll have a different resolution, size... I don't know if any of those will match 4x6 or 5x7
But really, does it really bother to do Image->Image size ?

Or just make an action for Photoshop so it does it on its own..

I'm pretty sure he was refering to aspect ratio more then resolution

you mind elaborating on that. photoshop can't just resize the image because then peoples heads would look long or they would look all stretched out and fat.
and yes i was refering to the aspect ratio.

you will lose the aspect ratio if you do that to pictures.

you will lose the aspect ratio if you do that to pictures. When you resize a picture? What do you mean you lose the aspect ratio? Isn't therea checkbox "preserve aspect ratio" ?

yes there is and if you preserve it then you can't get a 5x7 or a 8x10. it preserves the 3x4 aspect ratio which makes it impossible to get those other sizes without cropping. or at least that is how i think it works
