A few questions about EE features:
1. Can it handle many exhibitions/albums ? For multiple events. Like 'Summer 2002-zoo', 'Summer 2002-cottage', Summer 2002-trip North', etc., etc. Over time, this will become a LARGE list !
2. How does one set up security/logons/exhibitions; such that certain users get to look at a subset of all the exhibitions ?
3. Is there a repository of user developed styles available somewhere ?
4. How can I restrict the author/camera data shown on first view - yet make it available upon a click/selection
5. Can EE capture EXIF data and store in database & make available as in 4. above.
6. Are there any plans for picture level comments ? This would be desirable.
7. Providing a guided method for my users to download & print selected pictures would be nice.
8. There seems to be subtle differences in how IE & Opera 6 handle both EE user & admin level. Consistency would be desirable.
9. When is the next version of EE likely to appear ?

Full exhibition nesting is planned (and designed) for version 1.35, which should be release quite soon after 1.3. The nested exhibition system is totally free and you can place e.g. exhibition id 7 inside several exhibition groups (e.g. "My Tiger" -exhibition may belong to group "Animals from the neighbourhood", "Family shots" and "Hair extravaganza").
2. How does one set up security/logons/exhibitions; such that certain users get to look at a subset of all the exhibitions ?
I'll see if this could be offered in 1.35. That may require cookies and I'm no cookie fan.
3. Is there a repository of user developed styles available somewhere ?
No, not yet. As soon as people start sending me their styles I'll set one up.
4. How can I restrict the author/camera data shown on first view - yet make it available upon a click/selection
This is possible to code, but it was not in the "wishlist" yet. That technique is implemented in list page forms in 1.3
5. Can EE capture EXIF data and store in database & make available as in 4. above.
EXIF will come in 1.4, I just got a new developement server with all modules installed so I can start testing EXIF stuff. Also, a Windows upload/resize/exif program is coming along nicely.
6. Are there any plans for picture level comments ? This would be desirable.
Yes, commenting and rating will come. Both can be deactivated if not needed.
7. Providing a guided method for my users to download & print selected pictures would be nice.
There is an EE commerce plugin system in EE 1.3 which lets you select a sales method or methods for each photo - one method could be a free shopping cart type print service. Those custom templates have to be coded by someone who knows PHP, though - EE delivers all neccessary data for the templates. With 1.3 I provide PayPal cart integration for print ordering among some others.
Generally, I do not recommend offering originals directly though web pages in public exhibitions.
8. There seems to be subtle differences in how IE & Opera 6 handle both EE user & admin level. Consistency would be desirable.
There are some style sheet (CSS) techniques Opera does not handle, so some differences are always there and they may disappear with new versions of Opera. HTML is not a a DTP language: the code defines the structure of the page and suggests appearance, and the browser then does it the way its designers prefer. If there are some annoying differences feel free to point them to me. But please wait for 1.3 before commenting, as there are changes there.
9. When is the next version of EE likely to appear ?
Exhibit Engine 1.3 and EE backup 1.0 are virtually ready. Maybe three-four days of coding still. I have learned now not to mention any specific release dates. I can only say that "very soon".

Re Questions Comments:
Thanks for the reply. Waiting avidly for the next release !

One can now code a picture as 'public' or not. So how does one access a non-public picture ??
Better yet, coding a whole exhibition as non-public - yet providing a server security based access would be great.
