Here are a couple, more at photosbyjosh.com (http://www.photosbyjosh.com).

They were backlighting Luther Dickinson pretty hard so I don't have a ton of great shots of him, and I got so caught in in the music I pretty much ignored the Steve Gorman (drums), Sven Pipien (bass), whoever's playing keys these days, and the backup singers! Whoops!

C&C if ya got it

Great shots man. 2 and 3 are awesome. Now I see what people mean about the cloudy stage. I shot them last week and it was too windy so there wasn't any clouds on stage. Great stuff, thanx for sharing.

This is a great opportunity. Guero apparently also recently photogged them and his photos and faces look brighter than yours. Here's some examples:

I presume the Black Crowes travel with a light rig so it should have been the same lighting as yours.

If so, you and Guero ought to share notes on what gear you used and settings to figure out what he was doing different than you!

Great opportunity to learn presuming you guys both shot the same tour with same lighting rig and regime [usually they don't change the lighting patterns show to show on a tour - it's all programmed in and the same show to show].

Guero's Black Crowes thread is still on the first page of the forum. Surprised you missed it. Take a look and leave some comments on what you think!

josh left for europe today, so i doubt he will be checking in on potn in the near future. i do know that this was at the beale street music festival so, i doubt it was the same lighting rig.
they do program the lights, but there is still an ld, and each show is neither played or light the same from night to night.

So they are just using the venue lighting?

Then that would make a big difference from show to show, especially if a venue does not have a lot of front lighting.

So what's Josh doing in Europe? I'm presuming something cool, that's why I'm curious to know.

Josh, i am a big fan you know that... that said this set does not do much fore me...

And i think a big reason Guero's set is better lit and colorful is that Josh seems to have desaturated a lot on his set? Either that or the WB had to be adjusted in post and it did not convert well with the exposure. Josh can clarify this though.

1. Pretty good shot if someone's head was not partially in the picture.

2. Too much flare from the light as it cuts into his shoulder area.

3. To much shadow on his face due to backlighting as you noted

4. Looks out of focus

since it was a festival i would be very surprised if each act set up their own lighting between sets. you are correct in that the black crowes do travel with their own lighting rig; however, for festival sets, i think they just use what is provided. i'm sure they did use their own ld, but it was probably with a foreign rig.

i'm not sure what he is doing in europe. i think it is just vacation. he called me trying to get me to talk him out of taking the hood for the 70-200, but that's about all i know.

1) In Europe on vacation. Got back last night. Am very tired.

2) Light rig was the fest's, but they do tour with their own lighting director, Chris Kuroda, who was Phish's LD for years.

3) Desaturation (moemoe6434) - not a bit (other than the obvious Sepia/B&W conversions).

I routinely don't desaturate, and other than minimal adjusting of levels/curves in PS and exposure (for some reason as a personal rule I try not to bump any more than +/- 1) or contrast in ACR, I generally don't touch anything in PP. However, for the most part with any of my images I post anywhere, what comes out of the camera is pretty close to what is posted if not 100% an out-of-camera image.

I'm lazy. I try not to do a lot of PP. Or maybe I do but I don't consider it a lot :)
