For all of you owners of this lens. I live only a couple of hours from Bosque Del Apache and am going there in the AM. I realize you are not supppose to have IS on while mounted on a tripod. My question to you is: If you are panning in flight shots can you have your IS on in the pan mode and be mounted on a tripod? Have any of you tried this and what was the result?

As I understand it the reason for not having IS on when using a tripod is that the IS wants to work on something so when on a tripod it might try to make an adjustment when none is needed. This cause a jiter problem.
Since you are moving the image I would think the IS would work fine provided you have the IS set to mode 2.

Thanks Steven. That is kind of what I felt also. Guess I will know tomorrow.

With IS on and the 100-400 held stationary in a tripod, you'll start getting seasick as you look through it.. Everything will wander about slowly as the lens tries to compensate for motion that isn't there.

If you're panning on a tripod, then you have motion so the IS will behave.. But will you be constantly panning with no chance of hoding the camera still ?

The problem I see is that you will be holding the camera still at times. When you do that, then the IS will start acting up.

You can try, but it's best to leave IS off when tripod mounted. Camera shake shouldn't be a concern.

Any idea of what shutter speed you will be using? IS may not be needed if the shutter is quick enough.

As a scuba diver, I can relate to this when I frist tried out the lens.... I tot my eyes are playing tricks on me.... :-P

Would this apply for monopod as well, or should I switch to mode 2 ?

Thanks

Feel free to use either mode on a monopod. There's enough movement there not to upset the IS.

Thanks. I will try that soon.

Can't wait to take the lens out again....

Mode 2 is for panning. Mode 1 is for standard shooting. The documnetation tells you to turn off IS when connected to a tri-pod with warnings just short of your lens might explode. I wouldn't put that to the test. However, a mono-pod would be fine.
