i got a really good deal on a 10D and 50 1.8mkII. i don't consider myself comfortable with this camera yet, but i've seen a few shots where i've almost got it.

iso1600, pretty grainy, but i like the composition

this was iso400 but i think i could take it at a lower speed and get rid of the grain.
a lighting experiment with a portable bike light. i'm retaking this tonight [without my shadow:p]. i had to focus manually and this is the only one that came out clear before i had to get home. i'm going to frame and focus the shot during the day time, mark the tripod spot in the ground and then come back after dark.

how do you guys go about developing your raw files? so far i've just opened them in photoshop and used canons integrated utility that pops up automatically and lets you do all of the wb, sharpness, color correction etc.

Rob,

The second shot really does nothing for me.

BUT, the first shot. The first shot is a stunner. I really like the counter balance with the proximal partial skater and the distal whole skater. I like the mood (quietly watching/admiring another skater). I LIKE the grain - perfect for a gritty city shot, in fact, you could likely introduce more. I am glad that there is nothing distracting in the background - the trees are interesting to look at, but, once that is done, they disappear and leave the subjects. The only thing that I would alter, is I would get rid of the 3rd skater.

All in all, very well done.

I really like the first. The grain definitely adds to the mood of the photo. Only thing I can see that will add to the first photo is shadowing. Maybe take the shot while the sun is low. The second photo I'm not that big on either. It's not that it is a bad shot, it just doesn't hold my interest.

thanks a lot for the comments. i think i will take out that 3rd skater to clean up the shot. i took this when the sun was about to go down, so the shadows were already pretty long and pronounced. i could darken them more though.

i know you guys didn't like the first one but i had fun making it and felt i could do a little better, so i made another tonight. maybe you'll like it maybe you won't, at least i taught myself a thing or two. maybe i can apply this techniqu to something more fitting.

There are programs out that will take the noise out of your images.
Noiseware is one of em and if you search the boards of here and other forums. You will find more.

i have grain surgery but it takes about a day [not really] to compute and apply the noise reduction to my images so i only use it when i know i'm going to print something.
