agreed on both counts. the shots are great although I may have cropped tighter on #1 and lost the ump as he doesn't add much to what's going on.

doing something would require far more energy than Manny would contemplate expending. pffff +1!

I'd crop #1 tighter but leave the ump in it. From what I can tell Manny and the ump are having a little conflict.

I may be wrong but I also like knowing what equipment was used.

Here's a later one with a tighter crop.

Did you see Manny high five the fan as he made the catch bouncing off the outfield wall?

keithallison
15th of May 2008 (Thu), 09:27
Yes, that was amazing, I didn't anticipate that once in a lifetime event and stopped tracking him after the catch :(

OK, that's obvious, but why?

My point is this: the camera and lens used are probably the least significant variables in the "creating a great image" equation yet this it the question asked over and over on this (and other) forums, as though just buying the same equipment will result in images like those posted. If my presumption that one asking the "What camera - what lens" question is hoping to reproduce the type of image posted, then of more value would be to ask "What were you exposure settings? What were the conditions at the time of the shot?" or even "What was your location when you took the shot?"

Buying a decent camera and lens is easy, especially these days when the price of good DSLR's and prosumer lenses are getting more reasonable - what to do with them after you get them, now that's a little more challenging.

BTW, not scrubbing your EXIF data when posting will allow curious viewers to answer their own questions, as the camera model, focal length and all exposure info is embedded in the image when it's taken. A photographer has to actually DO something to remove it, like "Save for Web" in PhotoShop.

IMO, if one is going to post images, you should either not scrub the EXIF data, or you should post it with the shot.

re: equipment the 300mm 2.8 lens is the best purchase I've ever made. Its expensive but worth every cent if you want the best image quality.

Great shots, Manny can still get it done! Have about 50+ rookie cards of him...someday they might be worth a couple bucks.

Love the 1st one. I missed the game, was Manny going after the ump that's in that image? If he was, I'd leave the ump in the crop.

Exactly!!!

Scott, read the 2nd link in my sig. Dennis isn't poking fun at you, trust me he's making a point.

Well, if someone is looking into a lens purchase seeing photos taken of it can help. Just sayin.

Great shots, I like the crop of #1 especially.

Keith,

I was wondering if you had any issues getting your equipment into the stadium. The few times I've used my camera in Anaheim the ticket takers always threaten to have my memory cards erased if I use it during the game. That made me not bring my camera with me when I went to New York last year for fear they wouldn't let me in? Ever come across anything like that?
Great shots by the way!!!

Camden Yards is great for photogs and I've never had an issue with bringing gear. Each venue is different and the team website usually lists what is allowed, for example some places allow a lens of max length of 6 inches.

The only issue I've had in Baltimore is sometimes, especially when Yankees fans come to town, its challenging in the stands since we are packed in like sardines and the fans are drunk and rowdy waving their arms around with beer flying. I try to get front row seats when possible but that can be expensive.

Camden Yards is great that way. The only restriction that they have is that you not disrupt others.

This is quoted from Yankees.com:

"CAMERAS & VIDEO EQUIPMENT
Single-frame flash photography is allowed. All forms of video and motion-picture cameras are strictly prohibited. Guests are also forbidden to use lighting or camera support pods at the Stadium. Please note: Fans are not permitted to reproduce or rebroadcast any film of Yankees games for commercial purposes without the prior written permission of the Yankees and Major League Baseball."

I'm planning a trip to see the Stadium before it gets torn down, based on whats said above, do you think I'll have any issues bringing my 20D and my 70-200 to the game?

Where were you sitting that you got such great pictures ? I am going to the giants / white sox game next weekend but were way out on the sidelines near the corner of the outfield so im not sure if its worth bringing a camera 200mm 2.8 L and 1.4 or 2x extender .. what do you think

if someone makes you format yr CF card, don't use it again until you've had a chance to use the (free!) zero assumption recovery program...this thing rocks, and has saved my butt a couple of times. you should be able to retrieve all the most recent stuff off it (and sometimes older images too).

i have the same question. ill be going to the yanks/redsox game in july and want to know if they would reject me or not when i bring in my camera gear (ill be in the outfield so the pics wont be that good using my gear)

The Stadium will let you in. Bring your XTi and 70-200, don't bother with anything else (aside maybe from the converter). I'd recommend a toploader bag just to protect it on your way in and out.
Doesn't usually matter where I sit, I usually end up walking around and shoot from wherever I can go, so you may not be limited to the OF, unless that's the section that's blocked off from the rest of the seats (happens in some stadiums)

From the Angels' website:

"Cameras:
Still photography and hand-held video cameras for personal use are allowed in the ballpark. Per MLB restrictions game action cannot be recorded. Professional photography equipment, cameras with lenses larger than four inches and camera support pods are not permitted. Please be courteous to those around you when taking pictures. Please do not stand at the bottom of an aisle to take pictures."

And my repsonse to the part in BOLD would be

"not without a court order"

Definitely keep the ump. Otherwise you have a case of "Manny being Manny" for no reason at all.

BTW...nice images. Too bad you didn't get the high five.

Not me.....I would definitely leave the ump in, it helps to tell the story of his look and body language.
