That picture is fine but it does have very little DOF, I am sure that is not what you meant to say :-)

The G9 is great...but you obviously don't own a DSLR and decent lense(s). The G9 can't compare.
PS, yes, I own a G9 and two Canon DSLRs.

So, who was comparing the G9 to a DSLR? This is not the DSLR forum, so if the G9 does not compare to a DSLR, why don't you hang out with the DSLR crowd, and let us happy G9'ers enjoy ourselves?

I am really enjoying my G9 after a foray to darker places on a couple of different cameras. I was an avid G2 owner and should have stayed with the line, but Canon thoroughly disappointed me with the G7. I was in serious debate on the G9, I was extremely worried about noise with that many pixels crammed on that tiny sensor. So far though I have really liked the G9, what a fun little camera.
Unlike the DSLR snob above I know the G9 is capable of some very fine photographs. I have taken photos with my G2 that were as good as any from a DSLR. It's nice to have a small package that fits in a small space sometimes. The G9 is very capable of fine photography, one doesn't have to look any farther than Pekka's own G1 gallery here to see that.
PS I too have a G9, Panasonic TZ3, 3 Canon DSLRs, 1 Canon film SLR and a bag full of professional lenses. The G9 holds it's own.

Glad to hear it, I'm also loving the G9 as well and working more with raw files
than ever before, in LightRoom beta2, cool stuff there :)
Here's a quick shot of my small knife, made by David Boye from Arizona, the
blade is cast cobalt, no magnetic signature and the bead is a custom bead
with mammoth ivory on one end and rag micarta on the other side,

I have had the G9 for a week or so now, and what really impresses me is its macro ability. You can get really close!
And yes it is not a DSLR, but that is what I like about it.

Well bully for you my friend......
I own 2 1 series DSLRs and a Stack of L's (see gear list) and I am off to Berlin next week and guess what, I am only taking my G9 because it is more appropriate for what I am doing and the results will be totally acceptable.

I own the 5D with decent lenses...so I am fully aware of the differences from a DSLR..but, I won't have a bad word said about this little gem, it produces great photos for a camera of this size and although it would never replace my larger camera, it allows me to always have a camera with me that produces top quality photos.

I just have to chime in my 2 cents worth too!
Sure, I could easily have bought a DSLR myself. I am very picky about quality. In past years, whenever I have traveled out of country, I have always lugged around massive bags of equipment. I would carry it all because my wife didn't want to bother. I had my Minolta X-700 and long lenses, short lenses, in between lenses, one touch, two touch, a gaggle of flashes, dozens of batteries, two tripods, big and small, 79 filters and related stuff and so on ad nauseum!! My shoulder hurt from the weight of all this stuff strapped around my neck. Then there was the camcorder and all its related stuff on the other shoulder. Whew!!
It got to the point where I was not enjoying my holiday. And then if I want to go swimming, where do I put all this junk??
Yeah, I could have bought a DSLR and related accessories. . . . ..
But I bought a G9 instead:D.
What an awesome little camera! Sure! It has its limitations. But what do you expect from a 500 dollar all in one camera? It is small, I can carry it easily in a pocket or on my belt with the little case I bought.
The quality of the pictures I have taken all over home and Mexico is astounding for a little point & shoot!
If you lined up all the non DSLR cameras in the world, I would grab the G9, in a heartbeat. I love this little piece of equipment and the photos it takes.
To those who want to compare it to a DSLR, thats like taking your Pinto to the Indy and expecting to come in first! It will cross the finish line, but long after the EXPENSIVE race cars designed for that purpose. Leave the G9 alone and let us enjoy our little marvels!!

The above is exactly how I feel about this hobby. It is supposed to be fun and physically I could not continue to use the DSLR (40D) and all the long lenses. Hell even the Lowepro fast pack 350 I had it in was too heavy for me with my limitations. By the way anyone want a brand new Lowepro fastpack 350? Cheap!!! I went to the G9 after I used my wife's Canon p&S (SX 1000 I think it is) last week in San Antonio and I was amazed at the shots I got from that little camera. I want to have fun and have a camera around when I see the sunset that I would miss if all my camera gear was home. I found I didn't even want to take all the stuff with me as it became a hassle. Thanks for the reading material while I wait.

Here's more material for the "waiting room". I like to look at great photos while I'm sitting in waiting rooms, so here's a link to stroll through while you wait for that G9;

All I can say is WOW!!
What an amazing collection of photos. You are one talented shutterbug!
After browsing for an hour, I realized I was only at 4%!
Definitely one of the finest collections I have ever seen.

With a PC cord you can fire an off camera strobe at 1/2500th of a second. Sounds silly, but works good to over power harsh sunlight for amazing portraits. I've been reading the Strobist blog way to much.

Bob, I'm not the shutterbug that took all those, they are just a collection of the "most interesting" on Flickr. However, I do enjoy browsing through them for inspiration and fun. Here's a link to the same photos, but with a different view. I like this view when I am looking for specific types of shots, and then when I want to view other shots by that particular shutterbug.

Off topic sort of. I am trying to affix a new op teck loop strap to the G7. Any suggestions on where to get the triangular or round slip rings? Thanks
