View Full Version : Compactflash transfers slow or normal?

I recently managed to completely fill an 8GB compactflash card with shots and transferring all of them to my laptop took about 50 minutes (2.73MB/sec). Does this transfer rate seem very slow or is fairly normal for compactflash? The flash card is an authentic (as far as I can tell) Sandisk Extreme III, but the reader is a cheap no-name USB2 job. If the reader is the likely cause of this slow transfer, what's a good fast Sandisk model to get?

I'm having the same issue. I use extreme IIIs 4GB and it takes 23 minutes to transfer using a crucial 2.0 usb reader on XP and vista. I would love to hear what guys are using and the transfer rates.

Sandisk's Extreme III USB reader is around $20. Their FireWire one is around $40-$50.

That rate is slow. I can download a full 4 gig sandisk ultra II in about 2-3 minutes using my integrated card slot.

I hear the firewire card reader is just as quick but, requires that you have a firewire port.

OK Guys, for those with slow transfer rates. I mentioned before I have a curcial 2.0 USB reader and it was damned slow transferring at 2.0mb/sec both on xp and vista (originally thought it was vista but I guess not) I borrowed a sandisk 12 in 1 reader (not the sandisk extreme reader) and it magically started transfering at 15-17mb/sec. So yes, it's definitely the reader. CONCLUSION: BUY A GOOD READER. Probably going to buy a Sandisk Extreme Reader USB 2.0.

Hope this helps.

It could still be a windows problem. I have an internal reader and sometimes it is fast and others it is under 1mb/sec. I am trying to trace the problem as we speak. Anyone else experienced this with Vista?

Agreed, I have the USB reader and can download a full 4GB EX III in 4 minutes tops.

I use the Sandisk Firewire Reader and my 4GB Extreme IV offloads in about 1 minute-odd.
Don't have the figures of my Extreme III cards to hand but it's defnitely not as slow as others have posted. Saying that, my old USB 2.0 Reader took about the same as others have said, I used to go and make a cup of tea whilst it downloaded.

Well my 2p worth, I had Intego's virus software running on my Mac. I noticed that copying to or from the computer was really slow, I had "Real Time Scanning" on the go which caused the transfer to slow to an absolute crawl. Removed this option and speed was back to normal ;)
