Is anybody else having trouble upgrading the firmware on 20D from 1.05 to 1.1?
I keep getting a lock up on the display that says " CF card containing firmware is required"
I believe I have followed the instructions correctly. but it just freezes and I have to pull the battery to get it to work agin. I never get the screen that displays the 2 versions of firmware.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Eric

I saw a post not long ago that a guy said he just wasn't waiting long enough, and he started pushing buttons. Give it a while (like a minute even), after than start pushing buttons ;) Then call Canon.

Thanks EricWhich of these files did you copy to your compact flash:

eos20d110.exe
or
20D00110.FIR

If it was eos20d110.exe, you need to double click on this file first and then copy the fir file that is extracted to the CF card.

The .fir file , and the size was 4.3 mb. I guess I'll try calling canon today, funny the camera is working well and hadn't locked up at all.
Thanks eric

Did you format the card and remove the camera lens?

Also when you are downloading the file to the CF card, you have to put it in the right folder.
I usually just put it right on the CF next to the Canon DCIM folder.

Trash the DCIM folder - there should be nothing but the .flr file on the card.

wait a bit for the camera to find and load.

NO LENS ON CAMERA !

Make sure the file is in the root directory on the CF card. If it's in a folder, it wont upgrade.

Tried it.
The camera is sitting before me with the "CF card containing firmware is required" screen looking back at me , taunting me for at least 2 minutes and counting...Ahhhh, I will call canon , but may just skip the upgrade for now.

There have been reports that this happens if a 1gb CF card is used. I used a 256mb card and it worked fine.

Formatted it in the camera
Put the card in my card reader and copied the .FIR file to the top level
Put the card back in
Removed the lens
Set the mode switch to 'P'.
Switch on
Got to firmware on the menu

etc etc

I just got my 20D (YAY!) and tried the firmware

1Gb card, it hangs at the point mentioned. 256Mb card is fine.
Both formatted in camera

But that presents a challenge, how can Canon release a firmware update to fix a problem with updating the firmware... I'm lucky I hadn't posted the 256Mb card yet as I only have 1Gb cards remaining!

I'm not sure what this means, the quote above. ....I've tried 4 different brand 256MB cards all to no avail.

Ah, not just 1Gb cards causing a problem then. Do you have any size other than 256Mb?
