View Full Version : Waterproof case for G9

I'm off to the West Indies early next year and would like to buy the underwater case for my G9.
Does anyone know if the fit will be OK with the custom grip and the bezel of a Delkin shade fitted (obviously, I would remove the shade itself)?
And is it worth buying the weights - I will only be snorkelling?
Thanks in advance

Dont know the answer on the customzation, but I will tell you the fit is pretty tight. As for the weights, I use my waterproof case for snorkeling only, and I think the weights would be a deterrent. As far as I can see, the major reason for the weights would be to stop your camera floating to the surface if you would release it, but thats EXACTLY what you want it to do if you're snorkeling - beats the heck out of seeing it end up 50 feet down. So if it's snorkeling only, I'd go without the weights

The weights make it neutrally buoyant, it doen't make it sink, I used mine in the cayman Islands last month for snorkelling only too. The fit is very precise so your G9 needs to be naked when it goes in, will try and post some pics when I get home from work. A word of warning though, it gets very hot in the housing after a while.

OK, my bad on the neutral vs heavy thought, but again, for snorkeling only, I still dont see the point. But the previous poster is right on the heat issue. I took mine to the USVI, and you HAVE to cover it up, or only put the camera in when you will be in the water or it may well overheat. And if you're going to leave it in the case for added protection and use it while on the beach (as I did), remember to clean off the case lens (as I didnt always) or you're likely to get smudged images. Good luck

I'm pretty sure both will get in the way. The case has to have precise holding of the camera in order for the controls to be usable. I doubt it will close properly otherwise.

Yes. Probably even more so than with full scuba. You will be fighting the thing totally all the time without the weights. With full scuba, you have aids to help you with buoyancy. Snorkeling you don't. I've done it both with and without the weights, and it is much easier to use with the weights.

Thank you very much for the useful advice - just what we always get in this forum.

I'm considering the purchase of a G9 and most likely an underwater case. Has anyone tried to put a G9 in the Canon G7 underwater case? Looking at the pics on DPReview they look very close to one another. The G7 case can be found cheaper than the G9 one.

won't work. the lcd's are different sizes. That will put the controls in different places and they won't line up properly with the enclosure's external controls. It may fit, but you wouldn't be able to control the camera. If they were the same, then Canon would not have had to introduce a new enclosure.

I used one in Dominican Republic recently and the weights came in handy. Also be aware that you'll want to 'air' the case out when back on land as there's a got bit of heat that builds up inside the UW case with the G9. Also know that you can video underwater too - pretty wild hearing the water gurgling while reviewing the video. :)
