I own a 100-400 Canon L Is lens and I want to get a conveter. I have heard about coke bottle effect with the 2X and I am wondering if any of you have used the 2X with this lens and what is the effect and how does it work.

Also I heard Kenko makes a good one, has anyone used it on this lens.

Hi !

The 100-400L IS is a superb lens that can easely be used with an extender. I have used a Canon 1.4 II extender and both the Tamron and Canon 2x extenders with this lens with good results. You do loose a tiny bit of quality with the 2x extenders but if you are carefull (remember on the 20D you end up with a 1280mm lens ! so keep up the shutter speed or use a tripod) you can get great results.

Here is a sample taken with the 100-400L IS, Kenko 2x extender and a 1DSmk2, I was shooting at f8 so DOF is rather narrow. In good light the 20D will still autofocus fine with the 2x Kenko (not with the 2x Canon, you need to do the "tape trick" on the Canon to fool the camera into thinking the lens is a f5.6) extender. The 1 series cameras will focus up to f8 with the Canon converters and above with the Kenko in good light.

Happy shooting !

Thanks Rudi but I am having trouble bringing up the picture. If you could give me a link it would be appreciated.

The picture is superb.

Where do you buy a Kenko extender from ? Will it work on my 28-135 IS ?

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the compliment !

I got one from my local supplier but since that is in South Africa I suppose it is not much use to you ! The should be easy to find in the USA.

I have not tried it on the 28-135 since I do not have that lens but I am pretty sure it will work since, unlike the Canon extenders, it does not protrude into the lens so should work with most if not all lenses.

Rudi,

Wow, nice sharp picture. And this is with the 100-400 and a Kenko X2 converter? Nice.

Anyone else have sharp pics with Kenko converters? I've always stayed away from those. Maybe I need to try them out...

Weird,

When I first looked at this thread the picture came up automatically. Now, I only get the link to it... Hmmm. Strange.
