Buying a 20D!!

Finally got the nod of approval from the missus to go get the 20D, Had a look on here and searched the web and have come up with a couple of options.

1. Import from the US - Discounted as will end up paying the vat and i'll have to warrenty.

This site can do it for £930 inc delivery, not vat to pay but manual will not be in English.

3. Buy from UK at Ebuyer £969 inc deliv, 7dayshop (poor rating) £959 or from Jessops who will partially pricematch against ebuyer to £1005.00 re phonecall today


I am thinking of getting from Jessops but not sure what do you think

Also need one lens (all I can afford) probably the Tamron 28-75 XR DI, the best uk price I can see is £264 from warehouse express which jessops will also match.

Anyone know where I can get it cheaper??

Will get a bag as well what do you think of the mini trekker classic, I have the G3 and a canon MVX10i camcorder which I will put in there till i get more lenses. Sigma 100-300 F4 is on the shopping list for the future with a 1.4 teleconverter to do nature shots local and at zoo's safari parks.

Great start!!! The Tamron lens is very well regarded..........and its a constant f2.8 aperture.

About the bag - That is a lowepro right?? should be good!! Before you know it, you'll have five different camera bags for different occasions..........and thats not even enough!!! YIKES!!!

I got my 20D and all my lenses at Camera World (www.CameraWorld.co.uk) but only because they have a shop in my town (Chelmsford). I always prefer to go into a shop rather than buy online when its something expensive like this.

I got mine from Jessops. They have a great service and it is worth the extra few pounds for that. I don't know the Tamron - personally I would stick with Canon until you are used to the camera. Why not get the kit lens (18-55) to start with - it is excellent value for money.

I have a Sigma 18-125 which I am not happy with and a Canon 28-135IS which is great.

Be warned - you may lose autofocus with a teleconverter - depends on the lens and the light.

Bag - I have a Nova 2, a Nova 4, a Stealth reporter 2 (came free with a mag subscription) and will soon be getting a computrekker (xmas pressy). It all depends on how much you want to carry around and how.

That means that it stays F2.8 at all focal lengths. The F2.8-F22 that you mention is the minimum (F22, really small) and max aperature (F2.8 or wide open, large) for the lens. Now of you see a lens likw say this one the Canon 100-400 F4-5.6 it means that it is F4 at 100mm and F5.6 at the 400mm end for max (wide open) aperatures.

Congratulations on your 20D and your choice of the Tamron 28-75mm, Boswell, it's a great camera and a fine lens.

As far as where to buy the 20D goes, I would avoid the US. You will have no warranty if you import from there. Importing from another EU country is fine. The Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX you mention as a future purchase is also reputed to be a superb toy. I've never used one but I will have done by early next year ( a couple of my friends are going to buy one ). All of the Lowepro Trekker bags are good. Just make sure the one you buy will fit the Sigma...
