What can I do to correct the blown out red on the feeder cup and the white of the birds neck?

If you didn't shoot Raw, I doubt you can - sorry.

Oh, ok. Well, if you reduce the exposure slider aggressively in ACR, do you find that the detail is there?
If so, you can find a sweet point with the exposure slider where you've got the detail you need, but without making the rest of the pic too dark. That'll give you a starting point, at least.

Is hightlight recovery available in CS2? If so, you might have some fortune with that. If the highlights are totally blown there is no way to get them back.

Even with a JPG you can get back and/or replicate the things that you are after. It is kind of hard with a low res version but it certainly is possible to improve it. This was a 5 minute fix. It is amazing how much repair can be done to blown highlights with some of the tools that are now in ACR/Lightroom. I pushed these a little further than I normally would in a JPG to illustrate that it can be done. You are still not getting all of the highlights fixed in the neck area but it would definitely be possible to paint that back in.

Sorry Sheldon, I think you're kidding yourself. All you've effectively done is added flat tone to the white areas. If Jim had shot jpeg, he would have been screwed.

I am going to bookmark this thread for use in the next RAW vs. Jpg debate.

I switched to RAW just as soon as I figured out that I was losing some shots in JPEG that I could have saved in RAW. Have never gone back.
