Hi guys, I'm just wondering what is Markins' reputation when it comes to camera plates? I know Kirk and RRS pretty much dominate discussions on FM when it comes to plates like L-plates. I know Markins have a good reputation when it comes to ballheads, but I have no idea on what their camera plates are like.
Does anyone here know if the Markins Camera Plate PG-50 will fit a Canon 40D with a BG-E2N battery grip? I can't seem to find such information on Markins' website, but it does say the plate fits a Canon 30D with battery grip.
What are the disadvantages of using this plate? I know it's not an L-plate so I can't use the camera in a Markins Q3 ballhead in the portrait position.
Markins say the plate is compatible with the Arca-Swiss "standard". Does this mean a camera with this plate on will work with RRS and Kirk ballheads?

That's one big disadvantage right there IMO.

Well, you can, but you'd have to flip the ballhead into the drop notch to go to portrait. Which changes the camera position, is more awkward and slightly less stable.

It will work in any Arca style quick release. However, if you want to use the RRS lever release clamp (http://reallyrightstuff.com/QR/03.html), it's a good idea to ask RRS first, since that one requires tighter tolerances than some manufacturers use.
(See the note (http://reallyrightstuff.com/QR/03.html#LRwarning) on their site)

I don't have a Markins plate, however I do have an M10 with Markins QR. Works nicely with both RRS L plate and Novoflex plate.

(The Novoflex plate won't work with a RRS lever clamp: The difference in size (whaddayamean; "Standard") is visible when I put the plate in my Novoflex QR (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4977289) (post #2))

When it says that the plate is compatible with Arca-Swiss, it means that the plate will/should fit any Arca-Swiss style clamping mechanism...nothing to do with the ballhead per se.

Give Markins a call or shoot them an email...they respond rather quickly. I had a question about the M-10 ballhead before ordering it, and they answered the question right away (and it was on a Sunday). By the time you finish scratching your head after getting 20 different responses to your thread, Steve Yoon could have already given you the correct answer. ;)
