Wonderful shots and interesting find :) - my guess would be a sawfly

Good shots - I've looked the insect up on a number of sites and agree with Brian that it looks like a variety of sawfly (Wikepedia has almost exactly the same "model" showing)

I'd say some sort of Scorpion fly myself. Interesting find.

Not sure on the ID but those are great images! Every time i snoop around here i wanna get into macro lol

Thanks everyone for the comments everyine and the ID. I thought it was a wasp at first, never seen anything like it before but i wasnt shooting macro till aughust of last year so missed alot of these bugs.

Nice find. Sawfly seems right, maybe a species of the Tenthredo genus? Bioimages have a few to look at.
