last nights race down walney channel a lot of tacking as the incoming tide was about 7 knots and the wind was very light a lot of the time they made no headway

If you can get on the water, you might want to position yourself at the marks and shoot the roundings. There is usually a lot of action there, especially in a tight fleet. The closer the boats are together, and the more action on the boats (sail changes, etc.) the more you will convey the feel of the sport. Good luck!
