I use the lens reversed, can get up to around 3:1 with the focus fully extended and set to 18mm( at a guess). Need lots of natural light to do that though due to the lack of a decent flash.
These are all pretty much 100% and resized, possibly some slight crops on some.

wow u can get 3:1 life size just with reversed 18-55mm lens..?thats amazing when u think a true macro lens and full set of knko tubes will only give u 2:1..and your getting 3:1 just with a cheape lens reversed.:)

The 400D has a sensor size of around 22mm IIRC? A 6mm ball bearing will almost fill the entire frame horizontally, so I think it's 3:1.
But like I say it's not really usable for wildlife without a good flash due to needing a massive amount of light.

So you can get this with the kit lens? Hmmmm... I know you need an adapter to flip it around backwards, but this may delay my need to get the 100mm. Definitely gives me some thoughts, and ways to save some money until I can afford that 100mm macro.

Yeah, you just need a 58mm reversal ring which are about £5 from eBay (I'm using the 18-55IS rather than the normal 18-55, it's a bit sharper). You can do it by just holding the lens up to the body but it's really hard to do that way.

I'm not, I was just about to order one of these though - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10920
Edit: While I'm here could anybody ID this for me? It's tiny, maybe 2-3mm in length.

You definitely did a fantastic job there.
