Hello all. I am looking for an "all around" filter, sort of for protection as well for a 40d with 28-135 lens(72mm.) What do you recommend? I obviously don't want one that may effect my pics in a negative way.Thanks.

Try a high quality UV filter.

Any filter causes some degradation by adding two additional glass surfaces, but a high qualty one will keep it to a minimum. Since digital sensors are relatively (relative to film) insensitive to UV the filter will not do much other than protect the lens. Protection can also be obtained with a lens hood, with the bonus of reduced flare in sunlight.

For a filter i recommend the B+W 72mm MRC which can be found here:

B+W 72mm MRC (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/11993-REG/B_W_66070243_72mm_UV_Haze_010.html)

Or here:

B+W 72mm MRC (http://cgi.ebay.com/B-W-72mm-MRC-UV-010-Filter-NEW-F-PRO-Multi-Coated-Alloy_W0QQitemZ380026943421QQihZ025QQcategoryZ1521 9QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

For my lenses I have the B+W MRC filters on them and always use a hood.
