I am using the Manual (pick shutter speed and aperture) mode when taking pictures in my in-home studio. My pictures are not as focused as I would like them to be (auto-focus aimed at face). Do I need to make my aperture opening smaller so I can get a longer DOF? I am usuing a Rebel XT kit lens.

Well, you could start by telling us what settings you're using for shutter speed and aperture, as well as what you're using for lighting.
In image with EXIF would help tremendously. Lots of things can cause blurriness, but a trained eye can figure out what's causing it.

You could just make sure you are at f8.0 or higher with that kit lens. It's a real nice lens for the price but neither of mine delivered sharp images below f6.3.
Other than that there are several reasons for less than sharp images. Post an image with exif. That's the easiest way to get some help.

Thanks guys. I will try to post some when I get home. I did not write down my settings but I think it is still on the camera. I think the f stop was around 5 so that may be my problem.

I have an xt and I shoot at f/4 or 2.8 when I have my studio set up to blur the background some but I have to sharpen my image and I'm using the kit. My lens is the sharpest at 5.6..but I have yet to see any digital image from any camera that did not need some sort of sharpening. Digital right out of the camera will not be as sharp as film..

I almost put my 400D back on ebay when I saw the images that came out with the kit lens. I may just have a really bad copy, but I could not see the difference between quality between my it and my previous cheapo compact. When I bought another lens I instantly saw where the problem was.
Not sure what your studio lighting consists of. Try using F8, 1/200 shutter and 100 ISO. If the images are still blurred, you may want to invest in something like a 50mm F1.8. Cheap but sharp.

It's the shooting with kit lens that's be the problem, not the fact that it's digital.

(auto-focus aimed at face) The eyes! Focus on the eyes.

The kit lens will still produce fairly sharp pics if you are using strobes, so what type of lighting are you using? Continuous, Strobe?

I know my kit lens is good.
I don't know how you expect it. But mine served me very well.
I like mine.

What kit lens did you get? Mine only goes to F/4 at 18mm and 5.6 at 55mm.;)

Does Canon now offer an f2.8 kit lens with the body?
Interesting story - our daughter has started a photo business. When she first started with a Canon XTi I suggested she just buy the body and I would give her a kit lens until she could upgrade it. She now has a business that is doing very well and finally bought a new zoom lens (she prefers fixed). When she returned the kit lens I told her she could keep it. Her response ' No thanks'.
But back to the OPs original issue - we need an image with exif. It could very well be a much different issue.
