I have owned the G1377, but nothing from Cullman and nothing from the Bogen/Manfrotto line.
What is everyone's opinions of the Bogen/Manfrotto 488 vs. the G1277 or G1377. Also, has anyone used Cullman heads and can speak of their quality level?
Thanks!

I have the 488RC. It's a good one. Can hold the 5D with any large lens.

Have you had any issues with the plastic ball used in it (my main concern)? A few years ago I had heard some chatter about the phenolic balls not lasting too long. I don't know how much merit those gripes really had.

Before getting my Gitzo tripod with Markins head, I was using a Velbon 540 CF with the Gitzo 1277M ballhead. Had no problems supporting my 5D/100-400L or the 5D/70-200 2.8 combos. The 1277M is a great ballhead...very smooth, without any noticeable drift, slip, or creep (whichever is the correct word). IIRC, they cost about $170 plus/minus at B&H.

Yeah the 1277 is the most expensive of the three. It's $177 but comes with a mail-in rebate for $40. In the end it barely makes my budget.
