Useing a 40D. Have 17-85mm, 85 f/2 prime, and a 70-200 f/2.8
If shooting family pictures inside/outside with group of 6 or more people what lens would I need? Maybe the 17-85 is ok but any suggestions on something a little better?

Canon 10-22mm. Sigma, and Tamron have some wide ones too 11-17, 12-24, etc. Check www.sigma4less.com or www.bhphotovideo.com or www.adorama.com or www.buy.com, etc....for best prices. Or, check www.resellerratings.com for reviews to different sites, and prices, from each of those sites, all in one.
Though, I would think your 17 - 85 should be good enough.
Good luck.

Inside it depends on the size of the room.
Both inside and outside it depends on your ability to pose a group in a relatively small arrangement.
Remember, if you use an ultra wide lens in photographing people, you will have quite a bit of normal (for wide lenses) distortion to worry about.
Google it with "posing groups for photography" as your search parameters. Here are a few hits I got from that search:
