I'm looking at purchasing photo editing software. I want to bump my game up to the next level. I'm weighing the negative vs positive of Aperture and Photoshop CS3.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Right now I'm a slightly experienced novice photographer.
I use a 40D primarily and then I play around with a G9.
I'm looking to get into the more creative aspect of photography right now. I'd like to be able to do black and white photographs with a single isolated color.

A single isolated color is oftend called "selective coloring." Well i can not comment on cs3, i use PS elements 6, and i am able to achieve that threw this softwear. And there are several Differnt ways do it.
I saw you use the g9. the g9 can do this IN camera. But it looks better when you do it threw softwear.
i can notcomment On Aperture. If your looking for creative things to do with an Image, i know using photoshop elements you can achieve alot of differnt looks. So im sure cs3 can only be better at this. Happy shooting.

Aperture and Photoshop CS3 are two vastly different products. There is some overlap between the two, but Photoshop is targeted at photo editing, while Aperture is targeted at workflow and managing images. Both products can do basic image enhancements, but you can't edit images with Aperture, nor can you effectively manage your workflow or image library with Photoshop.
I would suggest that you download the demos and play with each one to make up your mind. That will give you a better understanding of what each can do for you. The price difference is also substantial between the two.
I use both in my work, and wouldn't want to do with either. However, if I wanted to keep my costs down, knowing what I use both for for now, I would get Aperture and PS Elements. That would give me a very useful blend of both pieces of software, and at a cost lower then PS CS3 alone.
