I am new here! Sorry, Im sure this has been asked many times here. I did a search, but didnt find what I am looking for. Can you tell me what is the best backdrop to get to shoot portraits? What material, what brand, where to buy from?? What do you use? Thanks!

That is a very good site ninext posted. If you will read through it, you will see that with gels, you can turn it any color you wish.

from what i hear the cheap kits on ebay aren't bad. personally i went to home depot and mad a very adjustable one out of PVC pipe and bought a muslin backdrop off ebay. Haven't had any problems and it's really cost efficient

look at muslins at amvona.com they are good, and fair priced. be careful with the cheapest ebay ones, alot of times the material is very thin

I'm not a big fan of high key effect and do it allot (clients). I to prefer muslin. The price is so much cheaper now than they used to be. I think I paid like $900 for mine 20 years ago. 10X20 gray.

They are all going to be somewhat thin, but i have known people with the SHEER ebay ones that are seriously like a window screen or something. they allow you to totally see through.
Being thin like a bedsheet is ok, as long as the thread count is dense enough to do the job need done.
The "handpainted" muslins from amvona are very dense, thick and canvas-like. Much of this may be attributed to the paint process, i am not sure.
chroma key is meant to NOT have any texture, and does not need weight. it gets selected and processed out.
If you got thier black one, you'd notice it is a bit more heavy duty.

using gels with white paper isnt the best idea as its hard to get a fully saturated color, it tends to be very washed out. black is best if you're using gels. i prefer gray, as it maintains color pretty well if you're using gels and its easy to turn white or black with lighting.

You've got that right! I find white to be the most difficult to light properly. Just had an opportunity to try a friends gray canvas background and it was a dream to shoot with. No wrinkles, easy lighting, and it can go from black to white with proper lighting.
