Hello all. Normally I slink around in SLR land so this is my first post in this section.

I need your help picking a model of point and shoot for my nephew. He wants a new camera for Christmas but he told his mom that he really wants it to have a BW feature. Being as I know next to nothing about the Powershots or similar I was hoping that someone could tell which, if any of the models have that option. Or if I am ::gasp:: going to have to go to the dark side and get him a Sony or something.

I know that he could do it in PS, but you know kids. I think that if I got him a model where it was just a flip of the switch or other on camera feature he would be alot happier.

I anxiously await your information (b/c I haven't started do my X-Mas shopping yet). And thanks in advance.

Stay away from the DARK side!

Iv had the unforunate experiance of useing several Sonys now, all owned by friends.
They are so painfuly slow its like useing a pinhole camera with the CCD inside it.

It sounds to be like you need to get him an A series.
All the control of an SLR with out the quality, size or anywhere near the cost.
And a great B&W function, as well as Sepia if he's so inclined.

The Cybershot p92/p93 is a great camera, much faster then the canon's in its league... I'm pretty sure it had BW but I can't remember, great camera though. ^_^

I'm pretty sure every digicam in the Canon A & S series has the ability to do BW. I use it every once in awhile on my S400. The wife really likes the BW stuff I do with portraits of our 3 yr old son.

Don't know much about the Sony's...

The A75 and the A series has a black and white setting. I love it. I mount a yellow filter on the lens and go to town.

I have a Canon A70, predecessor to the newer A75, A80 and A95 among others. Mine has a handy BW setting, but I have never used it, so can't tell you how good it is.
