Youch... I didn't think these guys stuck around. You do seem to be able to find the stupid ones  all the time.

Nice shot but I bet your toes were cold too.

JZ Jerry,
I watched this guy for at least 30 minutes before I decided I was too cold to stay outside. Funny thing was that he was catching little minnows. He seemed to enjoy wading around. I always thought that herons migrated......have to check that out.

Ya that one migrated from the Artic Circle to the warmer climate of Monteral. :D :D :D I guess it's all relative. :) :)

I've never seen one look so .. sad :(

The majority of them do Migrate and then nest. (they do this whole communal rookery thing)

But it is fairly common for "lone rangers" to stick around. There is one (out of many) that sticks around in Providence all winter... in fact the vast majority do not return untill mid summer.. when the newly hatched are old enough to leave the nesting grounds.

Still,.. I would not have thouht they'd winter over as far north as DogSled country! :p

I am now convinced more than ever that the artic cold that blankets Montreal in the winter must hit the place fast and very unexpectedly. So fast, in fact, that any migratory stragglers staying there longer than necessary get their brains frozen solid. I'm sure that explains the many ducks and geese and now a GBH still hanging around when instinct and common sense should have told them to head south weeks ago! :D

Is that also why the Canadians stay there instead of migrating down to the warm climate of Vermont and New Hampshire. The cold just comes in to darn fast :D :D :D :D

Thanks for the kind words folks. I drove by again today and he was still there. Well not in the exact same place but in the general area.
Ecobo, I was using my trusty bird lens, 100-400L.

It looks awfully cold up there in Canada. Glad I was able to exscape when i did. That bird must be crazy. It could be down in Florida hanging around all the good looking female herons, but instead it's trying to catch a minnow in a half frozen puddle in Canada.

Hmm, yes, when you look closely enough you can see the slight wood-grain in his finish...
