Well, this was the first event of the year for me and a chance to shake the cobwebs loose and get some of the new gear out for use (first time out with the 40D, 120-300 and 70-200). A very dismal weekend as far as weather goes, Saturday gave some sunny breaks but Sunday just proved the inconsistency of the weather station as it poured rain down on us.

1. Versace Subaru, fastest of the lot on Saturday.

2. Sundown Grand Prix BMW practicing for the 3 hour enduro race

3. Durabond Honda Civic practicing for Sundown GP.

4. Playboy Mazda MX-5 Challenge

And now for the main reason I attended this weekend... Volkswagen Jetta TDI cup. These cars were a blast to watch, most being rookie drivers but above all seeing the new MK5 TDI bodies put to the test. All cars are pre-modded for the drivers with simple intake, exhaust, chip and Audi R8 brakes up front (insane!).

5. The #30 Aggreko TDI hauling it during practice

6. #23 D.C. United TDI keeping it stable in the wet on slicks.

7. #38 Oakley TDI

8. #42 Athletics TDI overtaking the #40 Auto Logistics TDI in Turn 1 during Sundays race.

All images were shot with the 40D and mostly the 120-300, some shots like the Mazda were shot with the 70-200 Sigma.

C&C great appreciated!

where are you standing for #1?? I'm lapping at Mosport next month and would love to get some shots like that.

and I love how you caught the wheel lifting in #8. great pics.

#1 is in the Moss Corner section (5a and 5b). If you walk up the hill slightly and get down on the sand you can catch the cars as they come into 5a up the hill and into the turn. It provides a great backdrop onto the Mobil 1 sign as well.

Which lapping day are you attending? Looks like there's quite a few good registered lapping days this year.

1 and 8 definitely are the best of the bunch IMO.

Used the 120-300 + 1.4 as well for #1 as well too.

Love the heat wave captured in the pic.

Thanks! I forgot that the TC was used in some of the photos, the 1.4 mates really nicely with the 120-300 and still maintains some great IQ. That scooby was a pretty fast one, every gear shift he was spewing black exhaust out though (you can see some of it beneath the car).

Does the TC affect AF speeds at all?

I didn't find it having any adverse affects on the AF speed even when the sun disappeared behind the clouds and it started raining on both days.

Thanks for the location, I'll try to scope that spot out :D

I'll be there on June 25th for the Mustangs@Mosport event. The GHMA and GTAMC host this event every year. 60 or so Mustangs (and a few other "Ford Powered" cars) tearing around for the day. There are also a few instructors there that run in their race cars too (Solo1 and CTCC cars). It's a great day for sure!!

if weather holds, I'll be there that day. I'll take you to the spot in T5. It's not hard to get to at all :)

Yeah, Turn 5 is pretty easy to get to and offers a lot of fun shooting opportunities because some of the more inexperienced drivers don't adjust their speed enough climbing the hill into the turn.

I'll be at Mosport whenever I can this year so if you guys are heading to an event just drop me a PM or email and I'll do the same.

smcclelland, you should register for an account at http://www.casc.on.ca/forums. It's the main forum for Ontario road racers and they would certainly appreciate your photos. They're all posted in the Road Race forum under the 2008 Photos thread (sticky)
