Hello,
Even though I have the above mentioned lens included in my signature below, I don't have it a the moment. It's paid for but on order. Will be here next week!! This is why I'm unsure as I've not handled the lens.
So, for those who have it, is this lens weather sealed? I sent an email to Canon asking this question and their reply was:
Image Stabilized super-telephoto L-series lenses add extensive dust-and
moisture-resistant seals and gaskets, enabling pros to keep shooting in
the worst conditions. The 100-400mm would not be considered a
"super-telephoto."
My reply was:
Don't mean to nit-pick but your lens brochure dated 10/02 (0034W954)
states as the definition of the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM: "L- series super
telephoto zoom lens equipped with an Image Stabilizer..." SUPER
TELEPHOTO...right?
There reply was then:
Thank you for writing to us. The lenses marked with the DW-R icon in the
brochure will have the Dust and Water Resistant Construction.
So there you go... But does this lens have any sort of weather protection above the "normal" non-L lenses?
Thanks to all that input.

I wonder why they couldn't give you a straight yes or no answer, lol. Seems like they beat around the bush a little bit. I don't think it is weather and dust resistant... but I may be wrong

It's push/pull... so no way :)

It's a sturdy well made lens...
But it is NOT weather sealed in the way that some L lenses are.

I have the 100-400 L and it is not dust or weather proof.
These are the only Canon lenses that are.
Dust- and Water-Resistant
Construction
The new EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF
400mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 500mm f/4L IS
USM, and EF 600mm f/4L IS USM
lenses are highly dust- and waterresistant.
The switch panel, exterior
seams, and drop-in filter compartment
have rubber linings. Moving parts such
as the focusing ring and switches are
also designed to prevent water and
dust from entering. These lenses can
therefore be used in harsh conditions
without dust and water getting inside.
The lens is equipped with a rubber ring
on the mount to improve its dustproofing
and waterproofing characteristics. As
the lens is repeatedly mounted and
detached, the rubber ring will leave fine
abrasion marks on the outside of the
camera mount. This will not affect operation.
Per on line Canon Manual.
I think when they say weather proof they mean a slight mist and even if it is your camera body isn't unless you have the MKII.

I'm sorry, but any lens that I spend over $1400 on, especially something like a 300 2.8, I'm not going to be hauling around in the rain.
If I was a professional journalist who 'needed to get the shot,' the equipment would be provided and insured by my publisher, so I wouldn't care.
I love my 100-400L, and haven't worried to much about rain as I like to shoot on pretty days :)
And I have a stormproof camera bag for my equipment if weather gets crappy.

You forgot a couple of other L lenses that are also weather/dust sealed, such as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L and the 17-40 f/2.8 L, to mention a few. :)

On page E-12 of the 100-400mm handbook Canon states the following: "The ET-83C hood can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and also protects the lens from rain snow and dust.
I do not think it is waterproof but water resistant even if it is a push-pull lens.
I think all L-lenses are water resistant all though in some handbooks they say that a filter (eg UV) in front of the lens is necessary to keep out water.

I can get the complete list when I get home tonight, but that (above) is definitely not a complete list as the 70-200L f/2.8 is also water resistant.

All hoods protect the front lens element, from snow, rain and dust. That is all. The 100-400 is not water-proof, water-resistant in any way, shape or form. The majority of Canon lenses are not water resistant.

These are the current line of L lenses that are designated as water and dust resistant by Canon (there may be some discontinued models that may also be water and dust resistant but I don't know which ones they are). I'm also not sure if the 1200mm f/5.6 L is or is not weather and dust resistant but I don't think I'll ever need to worry about that monster personally myself. :D

Thanks PaceAce.
You're welcome. I had the Canon EF lenses brochure right in front of me so I thought I'd save you the trouble. :)

It's push/pull... so no way :)
Push-pull has nothing to do with the weather sealing. The new 28-300 is a push-pull design and it has weather sealing.
The 100-400L just happens to be one of those L lenses that is not dust/moisture proof. In fact, it is far from sealed and should never be pointed down in even the lightest of showers.

Unless there is a misprint on my brochure, Canon has not designated the 28-300 to be weather/dust resistant.

Where did you get that, because I down loaded there on line manual and there were only four that fit the dust and water proof catagory. My paste was from the Canon brouchure.

I have the printed version of the brochure that is available online or at least I think it's the same version. The cover of mine looks just like the one online. Anyway, if you go to the pages showing the individual lenses, you'll see the DW-R logo underneath each one of those that are designated as weather and dust resistant.
