Determining shutter actuations by CF card?

Hi all,

Just bought a used 20D and formatted a new card in it and it lists the folders like this ...

DCIM > 266CANON > _MG_6602

I'm guessing that means it has 26K clicks? If so, how is that as far as wear/tear on the shutter mechanism?

That may be accurate or the counter may have been set back to 0 at some point. There is no way to know.

I think the published Mean Time To Failure for the 20D was 50k, but that is an average - an individual unit could have a very different life span, longer or shorter.

It's also possible that someone put a CF card in it that had file numbering starting with a very high number. The camera would adopt that as a starting number for further file names.

The ONLY way to find out how many shutter actuations have been made on anything but a 1-series DSLR is to send it to Canon. They have proprietary software that can tell them the truth.

The camera looks mint so I'm not too worried .. just get out and start shooting until the camera breaks .. then I can upgrade again!
