View Full Version : Maybe i'm blind (Censored words)

I can respect the fact that some people cringe over the fact that some people use words that other people often do not. But is there a way i can turn of the censors?

If someone is being a moron i'd like to be able to come to that conclusion myself.

Are there any particular words you'd like to see?

No, i just noticed a few more *'s since the new forum was up, and then there was a thread where someone made a joke and used a word valid of a bunch of ****'s and becuase of this i aparently missed the joke.

Overall though it just annoys me. Most of us are grown up enough to make a decision as to wether we can see a "swear" or not. And for those that arnt, leave the *'s on by default.

I understand that, and in my list of important things, seeing swears on a message board is far from the top.

I would simply like to be able to change it myself. I'm not even sure if thats possible, and really all this thread is about is asking if it is. I searched my user CP pretty good and found nothing, so i'm assuming it cant be turned off. But i just wanted to make sure.

timmyquest, you know it is a swear word whether it is F*** or s*** or ****. What difference does it make if f**** is s**** or even c****???

There are words, and there are ideas.
We can do very little to control ideas, but absolutely have a responsibility to eliminate offensive or gratuitously obscene language. The goal of the forum is to appeal to the broadest possible audience, and not to the lowest common denominator.

If eliminating or altering a word affects the content of the thread there's a very good chance it's inappropriate for public viewing anyway, at least by the standards we've adopted in this forum. Goodness knows, there are plenty of places on the internet where you can find all the coarse language you could ever want. Just not here.

The challenge becomes finding words to express your ideas that don't offend others. It's not coincidence that as a general rule, the older we get, the less we rely on 4-letter words and obscenity to express ourselves.

There is another thread running right now that discusses a survey that was conducted by Wired Magazine, and that thread will tell you a lot about who's hanging around in this forum. It is largely a group of people who have lived long enough to learn how to express themselves without resorting to tacky language and sentiments.

Belmondo said it best. TQ, there are people who are not only offended by language but even the tone of it LIKE THIS ONE.

I dont disagree with any of that. All i'm wondering is if it can be turned off.

It is a global setting and it is on.

It's just an observation, but my experience on all types of forum over the years would be that having an "Auto-sensor" switched on actually increases the amount of obscenity used. Some people seem to regard it as a challenge to be got around.

On the other hand, on some completely unmoderated forums I use, there is never any obscenity. I suspect such a stance is a little radical for this (at times) overly PC forum.

My 2 cents:

If this is a global setting, then by all means it should be set 'on'.

However, it would be a nice feature if it was a setting that could be set by the individual user - 'on' by default. But that would have to be provided by the software vendor.

As mentioned above, most of the members have the ability to express themselves without resorting to having every other word be an objectionable one. But there are times when the specific word sets the tone or paints the picture. Jokes are the perfect example.

Also echoing an above post, this is way low on the priority list for me.

And lastly, this forum should be available to all who can read or otherwise obtain the communication, regardless of age - why someone would question the motive of children exploring this forum is beyond me.
Have Fun,

The "kids" argument is entirely spurious and always has been. Walk past any school playground and you will learn all sorts of new swear words you've never heard before.

Quite true, but I don't think we should contribute to it.

Don't forget there are kids reading this forum.Oh how I hate this excuse. I for one am sick of other people shoving their twisted sense of moriality on me. if you don't want your kids to hear or ready anything you consider objectionable then lock them up in a closet and throw away the key. No tv, no internet, no phone calls, no radio, and no interaction with other children or adults. Raise your kid in a bubble like that and see how they turn out. I feel censorship is wrong in any form but it's especially reprehensible to deny freedom to the many because of the concerns of the few. The owner of any forum can choose to block whatever words they want to but don't lay it on something weak like "protecting the children" (http://misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=8#)

Besides I see You are from USA, if any countries in the world have a twisted morality it is USA.

Just remember the rampage when Janet Jackson "accidently" showed a nipple on television. What an outrage that cause in USA!!! Who cares about such a thing, if anybody can get offended by a nipple they should not turn on the television in the first place.

Don't get me wrong I like USA and have been there several times but as for moral USA stinks. Just my .02

I think if this thread has degraded to the level of insulting someone's nation or typing a list of pseudo naughty words, then it serves no further purpose nor is it a useful discussion. I for one am going to bow out now.

It looks like an attempt by the inmates to run the assylum.

Do all of you really feel you have an inherent right to walk into any public place and use whatever language suits you? Church? A grocery store? A public forum on the internet?

The fact is, this is a public place, and you have no idea who is reading your words. There is a lot of validity to the argument that children might be viewing these posts. Granted, there are a lot of little darlings in this world whose vocabulary could make us all blush, but does that mean that any of you would take it upon yourselves to go into a playground and use that language yourself where children can hear you? I doubt that any of you would, nor would you want anyone else doing it around your own children.

But it goes beyond that. There are many adults who simply don't want to hear (see) that kind of vulgarity, and they shouldn't be forced to, at least in a forum dedicated to photography. Your right to express yourselves in such graphic terms does not eclipse either the rights of the members who don't want to read it, or the wishes of the forum's owner who has expressly prohibited it.

Evil: really nice.

ps, while we are on the subject of censorship/rights/privacy, who edited my profile? Because I know it wasn't me.

That was one of the casualties from the changeover to the new software. I originally had a link to a gallery that had some lovely topless photos of a very attarctive Asian woman. Got rid of it before the wife saw it.

Sorry if you were inconvenienced.

Please read announcements from time to time. I cleaned up all the false profile items because people were confused about them and they thought their privacy was being compromised. Now those who had a "borrowed" profile data will have nothing there.

Feel free to go to your User CP and you can enter any profile info you like.
