Dear Forum Members,

I'm pretty keen to buy a 1DSMkII, but I have one reservation. Sensor Cleaning.

I've had a 10D for 18 months now and love it, but I hate cleaning the sensor. lets face it, we all end up doing some kind of warranty voiding sensor clean more often than we might like to admit to. It just seems to be something that's inherent in the current technology (and atmosphere) that we have to get crap of the sensor from time to time.

Here's my concern... is Canon going to do something about sensor cleaning in soon to be released DSLRS? I think they should, and one of my friends told me that a new Olympus actually addressed this problem (I can't comment on that).

Anybody on the forum heard any GOSS about the possibility of inbuilt sensor cleaning on the horizon? Am I living in dreamworld? Should I go ahead with a IDSMkII purchase because inbuilt sensor cleaning is a myth?

If Canon do develop any inbuilt sensor cleaning it's unlikely to be incorporated into the 1Ds Mark II. You might see something in the 1Ds Mark III or whatever they are going to call it but that camera won't hit the streets for about two years. Are you willing to hold off on your new camera purchase for that amount of time? I imagine the next new Canon dSLR will be a 300D/dRebel replacement - if you're looking to buy a 1Ds MarkII at the moment I doubt if that will float your boat, even if it had sensor cleaning.

There is a way to do it on the 10D, in a roundabout way....in the menu...go to "M" (manual) setting, and scroll to the bottom and just above firmware version, there is a "Sensor clean" option. I don't know how well this works, but it is worth a shot.

That just opens your shutter and flips the mirror so that the sensor is exposed. This way you can blow on it and wash it. :)

I have just gone to bulb setting and hit the shutter release and locked it in shutter up mode the 1 time I cleaned the sensor.
