Very unusual - was one actually eating the other or was it a mating fight ?

From what i could work out it looked like the one on top was eating the other. Are they both midges? If so then i guess it coud be a mating fight. I watched them for quite a while and the one underneath wasnt moving.

Yes it's the male on the receiving end.
