Hi all,

I just thought about this one. Is it possible to connect, for example, a 40D and 580ex II using a PC Sync cord instead of an off-shoe cord?

Thanks!

Yes, you can. However, you'll only be able to operate the flash in manual mode since ETTL isn't available via the PC sync terminal (ETTL needs all 4 dedicated pins in addition to the main sync pin found on the hotshoe to function).

Yes, you can. However, you'll only be able to operate the flash in manual mode...... or "manual external flash metering" mode, a.k.a. traditional automatic mode, with C.Fn. 5-3 on the 580EX II.

But I would point out that using traditional automatic metering with an off-camera flash can be tricky. Aiming the flash unit's sensor properly is key, and it's not easy to do.

Also, to connect your 580EX II to your 40D you'll need a PC cord with a male connector on both ends.

True! I forgot about the "auto" mode on the 58EX II flash.

When the 580EX II is hooked up through pc sync cable, it is possible to still use the wireless IR built in to trigger other 580ex II flash?

The 580EX II was not designed to work this way, but it will work if you keep your shutter speed at 1/125 or slower.
