This is a reduced-size, uncropped (un-anything) picture. Any suggestions how to crop?

A little bit on the left side and some on the bottom. For the left crop it so u have the same space from the edge to the bird as u do on the other side. For the bottom just a little t bring the frame closer around your subject, but don't cut out the reflection.

how about this --- crop where the legs meet the water and a bit from behind the bird. then rotate 180 degrees! the img in the water reflection is fantastic -- the bird itself is uncomfortable for my eye since the head is "blown out" (so bright all detail is lost) and on such a bright background.
get back out there 15-30 minutes earlier so you don't have the shadow bisecting the bird. also, maybe try some other angle so that the background isn't so bright relative to the subject.
btw, reminds me of a similar shot i did a couple weeks ago... ;-)

You can afford to lose the right side and the bottom.
This will still give you the bird and reflection and leave some "air" on the left so the bird isn't jammed against the left side of the frame.
Run a light touch of USM and you have a typical bird shot.

nice pic
to bad the top 1/3 is blown out
this is a good application for the NIK color efex pro simulated grad ND filter
it can bring down the top and leave the rest ok
