can anyone do a tutiorial for me? my dumb again

I'm trying to do a drop shadow unig pscs. I have followed their help section - new layer, layer style, drop shadow, hit OK....................nothing happens!!!! where am I going wrong?

I figured it out..................It would be nice if the help section in PS would tell you that you have to increase the canvas size!!!!!!
