View Full Version : Sand in my LCD?!

Earlier this week my tripod and camera with 100-400 L attached tipped over while I was out photographing sand dunes. Luckily the legs of the tripod were not extended and the sand broke the fall enough to cause no damage. After I got reset and started taking more photos I noticed that there were a few grains of sand on my LCD. I tryed to wipe the sand off, but I realised the grains were actually under the layer of plastic that covers my LCD. My LCD works fine, but these five grains of sand look terrible. Is there any way for me to get this sand out of my LCD without having to send my camera in for repairs? I can't imagine being without my 10D for three weeks.
Thanks
Dave

It's very unpleasant, Dave ... I woudn't advise to try and repair the camera yourself. It's better to give it up for a couple of weeks, than to ruin it completely.

I've read the LCD cover is user replacable. I'd investigate that before I sent it in, mainly to avoid the time without a camera. Of course, the picture you want to take is always when you have no camera with you.

I didn't hear anything about it being replaceable ... But on the other hand - I'm afraid to even put the screwdriver near my 10D

It's just a plastic cover, I doubt there's sand inside the LCD.

easy stuff....
just take the back of the camera off. peel off the rubber grip, take off the eye peice cover, and unscrew all the visible screws and pull the back case off. wipe out sand. reassemble.
be sure to use presision japanese jis or cross point screwdrivers though (the kind used on jewelry and watches)... you can pick up a set at wal mart or dollar tree. they work great for me (i just performed several repairs on my camera).
its really easy stuff. dont be scared to work on it your self. especially something this easy.

Obviously this isn't for everyone. You'll probably void your warranty and could cause damage.

Thanks for the advice. i might actually be brave enough to do the job myself. Otherwise, maybe I can find a camera shop that would do it for me and I won't have to send my camera away. It doesn't look that complicated. I didn't realise the plastic cover came off the LCD like that. I thought there was some sort of bonding between the LCD and its outer over, but if that was the case sand wouldn't be able to get in there in the first place. Now my new worry is maybe I have more sand in my camera than I thought. If it worked its way behind the LCD cover there is a chance that there is a lot of sand inside that back cover. Any thoughts?

remove the whole back cover... dont try to pry the plastic from the back cover....... spray every thing out with compressed air while your at it.
and the only thing youll need force for, is to remove the back grip. it will take a good few tugs.
any thing else though, if it doesnt move easliy, there probbaly more screws to undo or your doing something wrong. take your time.

I feel the nerves! But your problem's easier to fix than you think if this is anything to go by..
