Not quite what you asked but if you want carbon fibre at around half the price of some Gitzos check out the Feisol range... I have a CT-3442 and it's fantastic.
I use a Markins M-10 head that's really quite nice - with your gear you could likely get away with the smaller/lighter/cheaper Markins Emile Q3 if you didn't intend on getting any huge lenses.

thanks for the suggestion. im actually ordering my 70-200 2.8 IS in about a week... will it support the weight? can you link me to their website? actually to be honest i was leaning towards bogen or gitzo because i actually get a discount from where i work. plus ive heard gitzo is one of the best you can buy...

Given your gear, I would suggest a Gitzo 2 series with a Markins M10 or the lighter weight Q3.

Yes, i would recommend you Gitzo, you will find good Gitzo tripod and good price with CF design, but try be in average of $400-600.

ok so ive somewhat narrowed it down...
sticks:
gt3541
or
gt2531ex
heads:
gh2750qr (off center ball)
or
gt3750qr (center ball)
which one of the sticks would you recommend? and which head to compliment? and finally... do you suggest any other set up?

Why the four section 3 series and the three section 2 series?
I'm choosing between the 2530 and the 3530....
And I didn't like the location for the column for the explorer series, nor did I need it....but I can see it's great if you have a need and use for it!!
I'm going with Markins or RRS for the head.
And I'm getting the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens soon, too!

well to be honest i used the system on the gitzo website that helps narrow down your choices. the 3541 came up as one of them and a friend of mine has a 2530... and that one happens to be a bit more in my budget. i just need to make one last stop to a local camera show to take a look at both to finalize my decision. so far my tentative decision is the 2531ex with the 2750qr head. i figured the off center head would allow me to have a little more control, faster qr, and a more leveled landscaped shot rather than the center ball. only thing im worried about with that is if the head tilts to the left of the right... i just hope that if you turn the head the other way so that it tilts to the left like i want that it wont be awkward. anyway, thanks for your input everyone. if you have further suggestions im still open... i wont be making the purchase for a couple of weeks. i hear lots of great stuff about the markins... m10 was one suggestion, does anyone else have another suggestion to other models to check out? oh and congrads on your soon to be new lens steve. hope you enjoy it just as much as ill enjoy mine.

I have the GT2931EX Basalt and the GH3750QR off centre ballhead. A little more than US$700, but it's a great set up

I have a gitzo with an acratech ultimate Ballhead V2, and I love the combo! Light weight but heavy duty enough to handle a pretty heavy load.

Check out some of the Manfrottos. You can get a nice pod and head for $300-400

think im gonna go with crossfires set up. i can get it at about 600 with tax... did my research and seems like the best way to go. only going with a bigger head just to maximize weight capacity. thanks everyone for the input, its much appreciated.

You won't be disappointed with this choice. Looks like you can get it at a good price too.
