Wonderful captures - not much difference in colour between the natural light and flash- assume #1 must have been bright sunlight ?

correct. tried a 5 shot stack of egg laying pair at just 1/100 sec but alas female walks as she lays and messed it up - most inconsiderate. Heres a pathetic attempt at cloning in sharp bits then smudging borders:
