Have you thought of B&W? Hard to pull off a dark subject like that against a bright sky.

Lone? What if there's a tree just a few feet away? If you wanted to accentuate the lonelyness then there should be lots of empty space around that tree. Also, the grass should be darker - the tree is too contrasty compared to everything else in that shot.

What would people suggest in a situation like this?
Should you walk up to the tree and use the camera and take a reading off the bark, then walk back and use those setting to take the photo after recomposing.
Would that have made the Bark of the tree expose properly.?
I have run into this situation before.

dewmuw : next time i see somthing like that will try and take B&W picture
karusel: i had taken this photo during one of my hikes , this tree was on small cliff not much place to take a wide angel picture
