Found it on clearance for $102 + tax. Great price and love the pocketability. Wanted a companion cam to go with my Xt. Had been eyeing the SD870, but didn't want to buy at the price.
Now for the bad part: having gotten used to image quality from the XT, I am lukewarm on the images from the SD1000. Color is ok outdoors, but inconsistent indoors. Will the SD870 give better images (sharpness, detail, color, etc.)? Or, am I expecting too much from these small cameras? Opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Expecting too much. I love my 4x6 prints from my SD750. Awesome little camera just to have for fun and use at any moment.

Yes, you're expecting too much. The SD1000 has a sensor that's about 1/8 the area of the XT yet crams 7 MP onto it. Something has to give.

I was impressed with the SD1000's pictures for the short time I used it. Here's a sample of what it can do. I think the only PP I did was reduce some CA on the welding mask in Lightroom:

The SD1000 isn't a bad camera. You just can't expect DSLR quality out of it.
I carry my SD600 everywhere, my 20D comes with me most of the time.

I just ordered an SD1000 for a "people cam". Its fun to have a pocket sized point shoot that you can pass around at parties or get togethers and let people shoot whatever they want. And I picked up a black one for $160 from adorama. So cheap if someone breaks it I wont have to worry.

i had an SD1000 for a short while and i was pretty impressed with it, it did great for me by compact camera standards in good lighting and it could do okay in low lighting but i definitely think you're expecting too much out of it. It definitely doesn't compare to the XTi i just got. the real downfall of the sd1000 is its IQ suffers greatly at mid-high iso
I think i've already posted this one in another forum but this is a photo i took with it at night that had decent IQ, i just had to put the camera on the ground because i didn't have a tripod or anything, as long as the subject isn't moving in low light you can still take good pictures, if it is and you need flash however then IQ will go down really fast

i think it would be a good companion camera, just don't expect any large prints out of it, 4x6 are generally just fine though

I don't suppose there would be any more of them at that price, hmmm?

Well, I decided to keep the camera and talk to Canon about it's image quality. Sent it in and they are "fixing to spec."
Also picked up a G9 and took it with me to Disney last week as 2nd cam to XT. Did a great job in good light, ok in not so good light. Definitely much better than the SD1000, but not nearly as pocketable. In the end, I will probably keep all of them as I love the SD1000's size--it's just a fun camera to have as others here have mentioned.
BTW, did not see any more at that price--major reason I picked it up!
Will let you know what Canon service does for it's IQ.
