View Full Version : Thread removed?

I posted a thread asking about ikea in general chat. Granted, it isn't totally related to photography, but I had a question and this is a very large board with a lot of members. I already got two responses that I know of (which were helpful) and then the thread was/is gone. I understand trying to keep general chat related to photography, but infact this post was related to photography (I am looking at ikea stuff to hold my equipment), and I see other threads that are more off topic/silly than this.
Maybe my thread was removed for another reason, in which case I'd just appreciate a PM explaining the reason... I'm a bit confused here.

One or two have been removed lately (one in the last half hour!) - Probably because they had absolutely nothing to do with photography...
Some threads were a bit too 'general chatty' I think ???

Hmm, I posted on that thread. I can only agree with Kevin that it was just too unrelated to Photography.
Next time go take some pictures of IKEA :D

So you think my Cat sick Poll fell victim to that?

Should had named the thread "Talking pictures at Ikea" Then somewhere in the post maybe not your 1st post reveal your question. Or place your question in anyone of the off topic large post count threads, someone will answer it for you.

Heck, I thought that's what General Chat was for, anything else not related to Photography. Honestly, I think there needs to be a place for us to just chat about other stuff than photography once in awhile, and this is where I would venture if I did.

General Chat (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=21) (89 Viewing)
An area for subjects not appropriate for the other forums. Keep it related in some way to photography even if only in the abstract. Political and religious discussions are absolutely prohibited.
Even General Chat should be geared toward photography in some way. This section has been created to cover any chat that is abstractly connected with photography, but isn't rigid enough to enter into the "Talk About Photography" or "Post Processing" sections. Most of the other sections are mainly relating to sharing shots or talking about specific equipment issues.
If you want to be completely off-topic, then there are many other discussion boards that are geared toward those kinds of subjects.

There are plenty of completely off topic non photographic threads in there now. It looks like its just a "friends" thing whether you get deleted or not.

Agreed.
And I know there are many other boards. Even computer enthusiast forums have a completely off topic just for people to ask other questions. Mainly, another place to help people with unrelated problems/questions they have.

The deletion/moving of threads is a discretionary decision made by the moderators here, which can be based on a number of factors.
Some off topic threads are allowed to remain because they might be started by long-standing members of the forum and are seen to be contributing to the community here. There are other threads started which appear to be quite wimsical and started simply out of boredom and have very little to add to the forum as a whole...
That being said, if you happen to come across a thread that is obviously useless, or in the wrong section, then you should report it and let the moderators know your reasoning. Doing this helps the mods out a great deal in keeping potn a clean and healthy place.

Correct. I don't really want to join a furniture forum (do these exist) to ask about an ikea product. Since this site has 100k+ members, chances are quite a few people will be able to help me out. I think that general chat should allow threads where people are asking serious questions even if they are completely unrelated to photography. Spam should be deleted of course...
The reason I'm a bit confused as to why my thread was removed is that I was in fact asking about a product which I would be using to hold my camera equipment. Seeing as there is another thread about "where do you store your camera equipment" I figured mine would be fine. Also, there are a lot more OT threads in there...
Not a big deal though. I appreciate all the work the mods go through for a site this large.

Did you specify that in the post? I guess if you post that's what you're looking for, then it shouldn't be deleted since it is related to photography in some General form, correct?
