I have just got a new 20d and purchased with the 17-85 kit lens, I have chance to trade the lens for $200.00 for a new 17-40 or I thought i could just keep the 17-85 and buy a Tameron 17-35 2.8? I have a 20d and 1d and the only wide lens i have for the 1d is a 28-135. which is fine. I mostly use the 1d for sports with my 100-400. I have a 20d, 1D mk I, 50 1.8, 28-135 is, 70-200 f4, 100-400 is and the 17-85.

any thoughts?

Thanks

It seems at first glance that you are just adding repitition. However, after taking the mounts into account, I would go ahead and get the lens for $200. Seems like a good price for a fast lens. Keep the 17-85, just in case. That is what I would do...

The offer isn't a 17-40 L for $200. It's for a 17-40 L for $200 + the 17-85. As the 17-85 is only about $60 less than the 17-40, after rebate, I wouldn't consider that deal to be worth it. You'd probably do better selling the 17-85 yourself. I wouldn't keep an EF-S around with one body that couldn't use it, because sooner or later you'll try to mount it on the 1D when you're in a hurry. Further, if you get another 17-xx, the 17-85 will fully overlap your other lenses in coverage, but with no particular benefits that I can think of.
