Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing the Cokin P series filters and adaptors but every description I read on the internet says they're compatible on anything down to 20mm?

Can someone explain how these filters work because my understanding is there's a filter style ring to screw into the lens, followed by an adaptor and then you slide your filter into this adaptor. Is this correct? I want to get a grad ND filter for shooting landscapes/sunsets with my 10-22mm but I don't want to buy all the gear and find the adaptor doesnt fit the filter ring or the adaptors are different sizes and the filter ring has nothing to do with it.

Also CPL filters, most on this forum seem to recommend the B+W CPL MultiCoat but the price is putting me off and i'm swaying towards the Hoya CPL Pro1, are the Hoya filter's any good? The cheapest B+W CPL MC i've seen is around £100 and the Hoya is half that price.

thanks again

To use a GND, you'll need three things: (1) adapter ring that threads onto your lens barrel (same size as your filter diameter), (2) a filter holder and (3) a filter or filters. The holder simply attaches to the ring, and the filter slides into the holder.

Cokin GND filters are not "neutral gray" and have been known to leave a color cast on the image...you'd be better off using filters from Hitech or Lee. Also, I wouldn't recommend the Cokin P-size wide angle holder simply because it only has a single filter slot. Shooting landscapes, you will come across situations where you will need to stack GND filters...with the P wide angle holder, you can't do that unless you hand-hold the second filter. I'd recommend either the Cokin Z-Pro or the Lee holder, with the first choice being the Lee.

For good values on Hoya and B+W CPL's, try this link (lots of folks here, myself included, by filters from them):

Lee's website has Polyester or Resin versions of their filters....what difference does that make?
