On average, how many raw photos can you get on 1 battery with a 40d?
if you add a grip with a 2nd battery, do you get double that or can it be more than double what a single battery is alone?

I think I shot about 100 raw shots at ISO 1600 with onboard flash on one 3rd party battery. That drained it to one bar, but it didn't really feel like it was slowing down.

Dont know exactly, but I have shot hundreds on a single charge with no flash. I alway use an external flash if I need one so I cant comment on the pop up other than its the worst flash you can possibly use.

When I was shooting some horse races a few weeks ago I was getting 1500, that is with no flash and the battery was not entirely dead I just quit shooting

I've broken 800 on one battery... but I usually don't run it all the way down. Grip lets me switch to one battery while the other charges and then I swap until I have both back in the grip.

what about using AA batteries in the grip cartridge. does that give about equal performance as the camera batteries?

Nope, you get less. I think the manual says so too.

I think 750 is the advertised shot count for a canon battery, you should get about half that with AAs.

Stick to the Canon BP-511's for shooting because the pack of "AA's" wear out much faster. I use the grip with mine and have managed over 700 RAW+Large JPEGs without any problem at all.

I'm thinking of using the AA's and cartridge as a back up to my 2 batteries in my grip. I'll be away from electricity for a few days. Probably wont' need them, but I want to have back up.

My grip with a knock off battery and a canon standard one has lasted for over 2000 shots raw w/ IS idling a hell of a long time

I am kind of new on this, can you tell me what do you mean by 1500?
Thanks.
