I noticed that Kodak just put out a firmware release which allows the user to click a button to raise the mirror and another one to open the shutter and take the picture.
Now, what a GOOD idea that is. Do you think Canon would take any notice and introduce a firmware upgrade to allow the 300/10/20/1d/1ds to do the same thing ?
It can't be that hard, can it ?

Check mirror lockup in your user's manual. :)

Well, I'll be blowed.

FYI, the feature is called Mirror Lock Up (MLU).

Lots of times there are little incidents like this where the original poster simply did not know the exact term for something. Once other readers here heard the description, they immediately recognized it and the terminology. That is certainly one thing good about this forum.
